Is there a blu ray player that can play .avi files captured from a minidv camcorder and also .mov files stored on a usb hard disk ? The hard disk would be connected to the blu ray player's usb port.

poisondeathray has it right on DV-AVI. Basically an obsolete PC-only format. Try some external media players like from WD .

Likely you won't know this, but .mov is not a format. It's a container. If you ever locate a BD player that says it plays "mov" files, check further into the restrictions on such container. For instance, a .mov or mkv encoded with h264 at 1080p 50fps or 60fps via USB drive or stick isn't likely to be supported. You'll have to be more specific.

The .mov files are from my canon t5i dslr and the camera's manual says something about it being MPEG-4 AVC / H.264.
And yes they are recorded in 1080p/30. But that's not my main worry because the camera has hdmi that I can hook up straight to the TV. I am more concerned about finding a good solution to play minidv tapes/files. My minidv cam does not have hdmi.

Hardware media chips cannot decode it, like the one WDTV has. There was some player that used chip that could decode DV25 codec: Ellion HMR 700A, perhaps unique when it was its time but obsolete today.
Cheap HTPC's seem to be the focus of our expectations, or all kinds of HDMI sticks with different OS or custom software running on it, where it has to be strong enough, software has to deinterlace properly and possibly have Ethernet port. Wi-fi versions (seems to be only wi-fi on those sticks) might not suffice, maybe yes ...

  7. Most newer BD players can play h.264/AVC in MP4 or MKV container from USB. Some have problems with MOV container, and your Canon uses Baseline@L5.0 so that level 5 will give problems for some models as well.

Only a HTPC will be able to DV-AVI (once transferred off the tape)
