I don't think pot player is the problem though. We've tried VLC and Windows Media player.

My brother has just built himself a HTPC. His video plus into a Yamaha RX-V377, and audio is plugged into an optical cable which goes to the same receiver. We have matched the HDMI <--> AVI4 audio source for the receiver and set the Optical digital output on the Realtek HD Audio manager on the PC.

    But there is no sound.

I have a similar set up at my home, but with an older RX-V371 receiver and I get 5.1 sound without any issues. The TVS are different in the ways that they match the sources, but essentially everything is the same.

Any ideas why he would not be getting any sound?

    Thanks

Have you set the opticial output as default audio output?
Tried different audio sources? Stereo, 5.1?
Are you sure the receiver optical input works(tested with something else)?
Try the htpc digital output on something else just to be sure that it works.

    Thanks for your reply.

To answer your questions, (1). Yes, (2). Yes, (3). Yes, and he even bought a new cable. (4). Not sure about the last one.

I checked mine and I only have a Digital output (optical) tab on my Realtek HD Audio Manager. So, I'm wondering if having the AV cable for stereo output plugged in as well as the Optical is causing problems. So I've asked him to remove everything except the optical, and then power up the PC and see if he gets the same results as me. Waiting on hearing back from him.

How is everything connected? (ie: ports, cable types, etc.)

Not all TVs/devices will process audio and video from different sources. For example, video input over HDMI and audio from optical.
