Hi, I was wondering if it was possible to extract a whole title from a DVD in it's original VOB format (using the IFO file to determine where the titles are etc.) similar to how you can extract based on a blu-ray's PLS files using a tool like eac3to. Does somethign similar exist for DVDs? I've found lots of tools that do what I want but they all insist i re-encode the file to a different format? Does one exist that simply joins & extracts the original vobs - into a single VOB file - as based on the IFO info for a title)?

  2. Assuming it's not a newish DVD with newish copy protection, then DVD Decrypter set up in IFO Mode (not the default) can decrypt by title. In Tools->Settings->IFO Mode->Options->File Splitting, you can set it not to split the VOBs.

Alternatively, after the entire DVD is on the hard drive you can use PGCDemux to 'Create a PGC VOB'.

Good old smartripper can do it too.

From the command line you can use vgtmpeg (no decryption). It acts like FFmpeg so you can use -c:v copy and -c:a copy to just rewrap e.g. in mpg or mkv container. It even handles chapters and language tags.

  4. I use DVDShrink for that. You might want to first set the default output target size in preferences to something large (DVD9 size or greater) so it just rips and doesn't try to "shrink". After you've opened a disc (or a set of DVD files you've already ripped, you can use DVDShrink's re-author mode. It'll display a list of titles in the right pane. Drag the title or titles you want to the left pane and then use the backup function. There's a preview for helping to dtrmine you're selecting the right title.

As with many older ripping programs it doesn't handle all the latest copy protections, in which case running AnyDVD in the background doing the decrypting will do the trick.
