AviUtl is a very powerful - but not very 'user friendly' - program. If you do have a go on your own, I think we may be reading one or two more irate posts from you! ...

Where is the bug reporting log?
Happy to help, and no need to pay me for my QA and Beta testing services!

Anytime you type "AviUtil" in this forum, it is hyperlinked to this page:
    https://www.videohelp.com/software/AviUtl

Download AviUtl Extra Pack 1.11 (direct link) (39.4MB)
This link gives you a CORRUPTED .exe.

    Download AviUtl 1.0 (direct link)
This link gives an app with a default font in Chinese, so you can't even try to change the settings..

The links need to be updated to the right links.

    Thanks poisondeathray for the pointers.
I will go explore some tutorials now.
What I need to be should be pretty basic.

    The very gracious poisondeathray says:

Make sure you have the advanced editing timeline interface (filter+ => adv. editing ), drag & drop your video onto the timeline

Check. I see reference to layers in the window.

To zoom , move the playhead to where you want it to start zooming, push "p" to set a "midpoint"
(in conventional editing software it's also called a "keyframe").

    Pressing "p" does nothing.
There is no indication I even have pressed anything.
    No marking indicator or anything.

If you don't already have the "standard drawing" box popped up, double click the video track.

Nope. 2x clicking the video does nothing.
What is the "standard drawing" box supposed to look like?
I tried 2x clicking with the video playing and not playing, as well.
I only have the main window, and then "Tool window" (checkboxes) and "Adv.Edit" open as floating windows.

Click the zoom% button and set "rectilinear" movement. This means keyframe interpolation is now activated, and it is set to "linear" or "evenly spaced" . For a zoom in (enlargement), increase the value from 100% to some higher value. Let's say 200%. Move the playhead farther down a few frames, lets say ten, then hit "P" to set a midpoint, and return the value back to 100%. So during those 10 frames, between those marked midpoints", you would scale linearly from 200% to 100%.

I see no reference to a "Zoom %" anywhere on my screen

  5. If you can't get it working, try an older version, like 1-6 or 1-7 .

    https://www.videohelp.com/software/AviUtl/old-versions#download

You need to have a video on the timeline, in order for the midpoint button to work. With the video track selected, push "p" , and a little triangle marker will appear on the timeline representing the "midpoint" / keyframe. Or you can right click the track and select add midpoint. Keyboard shortcuts will make your life easier when you have more edits later on - it's just a faster way of doing things

The standard drawing box is just a popup window, with all the track parameters and settings and links to filters

  6. @GoodEnough -- You said in post#1 that you already use Virtualdub. It may be simpler to just use the Motion filter form THIS PAGE to zoom in?

Just download, unzip and put the .vdf into your Virtualdub plugins folder.

In the 2 clips attached (which have no audio) I used that Motion filter to zoom in and 'lose' the boat moored at the bottom of the picture in the original ('orig') clip. The 'zoom' clip is the result.

Only took a few minutes to do that. It may depend on where in your file you need to 'crop' as to whether a simple filter like that will work for you? Should be simpler than trying to do this as your first use of AviUtl if it does work though....

    pippas,
Thanks for your time on the boat demo.
Unfortunately, I think I am going to need more granular control than just a overlay zoom effect (maybe more of a panning effect at selected times)
This is probably a job that requires me to pay someone...

    Poison,
Your directions need to be more explicit for me to understand.

First, I do "File-> Open" and select my AVI file.
Now, I have a video loaded into Aviutil.

Pressing "p" at this point does nothing.
Pressing PLAY and letting the video playback, and then pressing "p" does nothing.
(There is no triangle marker anywhere)

No idea how to open the "standard drawing window", either.

When I right-click, I see nothing in the menu that says "Add midpoint"

Are we talking about the same program?
I am using AVIutil 1.0, based on the link baldness posted.
(The official download link page is a broken POS, as discussed earlier)

  10. file-> open doesn't place it on the Layer 1 (track 1), it puts it on a background (you don't have access to it on the adv editing timeline, thus "p" won't work, and you won't see the standard drawing box where all the parameters are).

Open it as describe earlier, by dropping and dragging onto track 1 , this way the video will be exposed as Layer 1. Now you can select the Layer 1 and push P.

Sometimes the keyboard shortcuts can get remapped or might start out differently. You can set them or remap them in the preferences, but for now use the other method right click if "p" doesn't work when you import it onto track 1 (not the file-> open method)

  11. It's not clear (at least not clear to me) how you wanted to edit this exactly, but if you don't need the transitions (the actual process of gradually zooming in/out or panning etc...) , and all you need are "hard cuts" , you don't even have to set any midpoints. You just need to switch between different versions of the video . e.g. you might have a 1) regular version 2) zoomed in to person A 3) zoomed into person B 4) zoomed into person C versions. You just swap and edit between them as if you had 4 cameras . You only need midponts if you want interpolation between points (ie animation , like the process of zooming or process of panning, not already "arrived" at the endpoint)

Hahaha, I missed this the first time.... "baldness"

Don't use 1.0. Use one of the aviutl "extra packs" (english translated) from Maverick

Like 1-10, or one of the older ones like 1-6,1-7 etc...

    https://www.videohelp.com/software/AviUtl/old-versions#download

The original 1.0 is Japanese, not Chinese (although it's probably all "Greek" to you eitherway )

The "Extra Packs" download .EXE install is corrupted, so I can't use v.1.1
Does that download link actually work for anyone else?

Ok, I was able to drag the file into the layer, to open it.
This also opened the "standard drawing" window.

I don't need a gradual transition, if that makes it simpler.
I am willing to do hard cuts and just abruptly jump from regular to zoomed in.
Whatever gets the offending juggler out of the shot for the desired time period.

  14. There is no installer in the extra packs versions. They are "portable" in a folder, nothing installed.

From your scant description I think hard cuts between shots is the easiest way to do it. But it's hard to say or give suggestions without "seeing" it. There might be other creative or better methods of editing that you could present it

Note layer order is "reversed" in aviutl. Track 1 is at the "bottom" so higher numbers "cover up" lower numbered tracks . (e.g. if you're used to "photoshop" or regular editing programs, it's usually the reverse: layers on "top" usually cover up layers on "bottom")

EDIT: My bad, it looks like Maverick moved to an installer version in the newest 1.11 version.

Since this version (1.11), I’m moving to an installer-based distribution format. This move has several reasons:

THIS link is corrupt. So, I can not run anything beyond 1.0. I have no idea how others got past it.

    I currently have:
    layer 1 = video
    layer 2 = audio

Next step is to understand how this editing paradigm works.
Let's try the extreme zoom to achieve the cropping effect.

How do I make changes to the source video?
How does it apply my changes?

Do I somehow get the video into layer 3 also, and then just apply a 500% zoom to that entire layer?
How do I get the video into 2 different layers, so I can mess with just one of them?

Next, how do I choose which camera will be the live shot?
Like let's say the juggler drops the balls during 3 to 7 seconds, in a 10 second clip.
    0-3: Main raw track
    3-7: Zoom track
    7-10: Main raw track.

How do I make this happen?

Changes are non destructive. They just reference the loaded assets like videos. Once you are done your editing, you export a new version. Have a look at the beginner tutorial videos for AVIUtl on editing and exporting

You can just copy & paste, or drop & drag another instance. remember, layers iwth higher number will obscure layers below. So you need delete parts of video on layer 3, in order for the video on layer 1 to "show through" . Organize the tracks and the project so that it's easier to do (you don't want to have to do more work deleting). Let the clip that shows the most duration on the highest track number, so that's the least amount of work/editing to do. ie. Put some thought into the project organization first, and you will save time later

Adjust the settings in the standard drawing window on the video in layer 3 (e.g. just play with the zoom, x, y) . The way you might edit this is cut out parts on the video in layer 3. "s" is the hotkey for spliting a video, so hit "s" to mark in and move the playhead, hit s again, and push delete to delete that segment

    0-3: Main raw track
    3-7: Zoom track
    7-10: Main raw track.
So this might look something like

    Track 1 - unedited (default)
Track 2 - audio, unedited (default)
    Track 3 - zoom/pan applied, but deleted segments from 0-3, 7-10 seconds

Where the F are you supposed to download thing thing from?
Google just ends up with spamware downloaders.
F**k you idiot! It is NOT Chinese, but Japanese! (you're pissing off people speaking these language)
I have confirmed that the EXE is NOT corrupted. I can DL and run it fine on Win7 64bit and WinXP 32bit.
I also have reports that it works on Win8.

    so,
    STOP YELLING

If you get a corrupted EXE, it is your problem (either unreliable Internet connection, bad sector on HDD or malware infected).

You can also try the Old version link, and get v1.10 pack, which was simply non-exe archives.

^ Just confirming, AviUtl_Setup.EXE is not corrupted, it decompresses fine with UniExtract under Windows XP

Only one bad thing though, the contents of the directory named "AlertSound" do sound exceedingly 'gay'
