Handbrake shows options for subtitles.
Is it best or even doable to just make the hardcoded sub a part of the encode to x264 or 265?
And is it best to do this from the original disk?
I'm finally getting used to using Hb for smaller encodes to mp4 but subtitling in it eludes me.
I thought I had a complete ifo, vob set made for the content but loading vob 01 in the normal manner
did not show any options under the subtitle tab in Hb. It did begin flashing mildly so it was looking for something I did not have. As I recall, asking for the ifo produced an error.
Is there a step by step guide with screen shots to make hard subs in Handbrake from the disc? These subs would come from the original and not an srt. I have downloaded the current v. 10.01.

You don't open a vob file. You open a disk, a folder with a video-DVD folder or an ISO image of the disk. You get something like

Yes this was another question I wanted to engage. I have seen the mkv format run in VLC where the subtitle track can be user- selected. But seeing that is pretty rare.
Is there a Handbrake option which I'm not familiar with that can add subs as a feature without hardcoding?
There is more experimentation for me to do on this. I've only used HB in a simple manner without knowledge of all the presets etc. -
I have now got the tab you show above open to reveal the subtitles available with
Handbrake > load Source disc > Subtitle Tab > Add Track > tick the down arrow to reveal options.
Should mp4 or MKV be selected as, what?... the container to do this?
Next there is three options for each entry Forced (which I know is like a foreign speaker in an English piece for audience benefit, Burn In, or Default.
We want to make all but the default English audio selectable including English subtitles for anyone who wants to read along or check vocabulary.
How can I set this up properly to get these options.?
Is a particular player recommended to retrieve them?
Also does Handbrake have an effective preview player? I've run into problems with viewing previews
on earlier occasions. How can one preview all the options or does that have to wait for an encode?
Here are the languages I see:
Source Foreign Audio Scan
Eng
Francais
Deutsch
Why are all the options shown again under _each_ language entry? -
Just fooling around in Handbrake I made a fresh encode of the content and selected Eng as default.
But on proofing it, all the subtitle vobsub files are already selectable a the VLC subtitle tab.
This is something I may have overlooked in the past but how is it always duplicatable? What setting to always capture all subs?
My question on Preview is partially answered. I saw where to engage a preview of 30 seconds and other times selectable. But the possibility of viewing the subs field I still don't understand in Preview. -
I did not overlook the subs in previous encodes since I had been using the older AVI format with AutoGK.
Handbrake is a whole new set of features and I have looked at some of their FAQ but can use more details.
Still don't know what ll those subcategories under subtitles do and I have not seen where to find this
at Hb forum.
Audio is another issue. This content has big thunder noises come in and for personal viewing I
want to compress these. I'm testing DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) in Handbrake on this same piece with the max DRC value +4.0
