  1. Hi All,

I Normally use DVDfab to rip and then Handbrake to turn to a smaller AVI file. I recntly read that Handbrake can do all this one. So i pop my DVD in, scan for the title i want, and hit start! The problem is it comes out scrambled. I then downloaded the Libdvdcss DLL as i read may be the problem. I copied it into Handbrake folder and still it doesnt work. Any ideas?

Ideally im looking for the quickest way to get from DVD to AVI, i might just stick to rip and convert seperately as if i do get Handbrake to do all in one, i assume i have to wait for each one to be done before i can start a new DVD? If i rip to Harddrive then Handbrake i can at least get a giant que going to leave overnight

    Thanks All

Install a background dvd ripper like anydvd or dvdfab passkey.

  4. HandBrake supports a wide varity of input formats.

Almost any video file format that libavformat and libavcodec support.
Note: Your mileage may vary with less common / proprietary formats.

Unencrypted DVD (or DVD Images. e.g .ISO files) or Bluray discs (but not images). HandBrake can not read copy protected discs.
It is recommended that you copy any discs to the local hard drive first before encoding.

This is the link i found, maybe i read it wrong, it was a late night read!

Well thanks for the headsup all. I guess im best sticking to the long double process i use. Am i assuming there is no free way to do this in one and keep a reasonable file size then?

    Thanks

You could try using the free version of DVDFab Passkey. http://www.dvdfab.cn/passkey-lite.htm It will work for the vast majority of DVD's. Run it in the background when you use Handbrake.

Since you are using Handbrake to go to AVI, you must be using a very old version. They stopped AVI output quite a while back.

  7. Hi Kerry,

thanks for the info there. Sorry i convert to MP4 ! Not Avi! !

So the link you gave, what differs from that and DVDfab? I have DVDfab, but only use it to Decrytpt then use Handbrake. You say to run it in the backround, thus enabling handbrake to do it "all in one" as such?! As i buy alot of Boxsets it takes some time to keep ripping then converting! So just trying to find the most efficent way of doing it.

    Thakns for the help though.

I use AnyDVD HD to decrypt my DVDs for backup and it runs in the background.
I also convert with VidCoder, a front end for Handbrake, as I find it much easier to use.

I convert directly from the DVD disc in the optical drive, so no extra files.
I use the H.264/AC3 format and it takes about 20 minutes per DVD.
Seems the most efficient way to me for backup.

  9. Thanks Redwudz,

Is AnyDVD free then? Might look into that. I agree mine only take about 25-30 min for a DVD, but if i have a boxset with 6 discs, it means sitting around for hours waiting! This is because i like to do all the discs in one go. So ive been ripping them all, then when all done just que up each one in Handbrake and go in one big go!

  10. Sorry Redwudz, So you open anydvd and Decrypt then convert in one and it takes 20 min?? Where does Handbrake come into it ?

Sorry if im missing the point.

    In the 'convert' part.

And the last thing I'd do is to reencode directly from the disc in the drive as that's been known to wear out drives before their time. I'd suggest always decrypting the DVD to the hard drive before doing anything else.

And there is no free version of AnyDVD. There is only a limited time trial for it.

I use AnyDVD HD, the more expensive version, but I never use it as a background decrypter. I always rip to the harddrive first. I'm usually working with Blu-ray, instead of DVD's but AnyDVD HD decrypts both.
