Hi all
I have just been asked to move one subtitle (2.5 seconds long) to the top of the page or to change its color. I'm using srt subtitles. As I understand this is only possible if I use ssa. How can I convert srt to ssa-I've seen a program on this site will that help? Thank you

maybe this : SRTtoSSA 1.0
or Subtitle Workshop : select subtitle to which you want to change the color - right click...choose color
or manually in notepad...let's say for example a red letter "Video Help Forum" :
3
00:00:39,942 --> 00:00:45,471
Video Help ForumLast edited by prijatelj.v; 13th Apr 2015 at 17:15.

It seems that the srt to ssa program has messed up all the accents when I open my srt file in subtitle workshop (if I open the srt file the accents are fine). Why is this happening?
-
Only now I see...for me at Win 10 (x64) SRTtoSSA does not work..."stale app".
Also SSA subtitle you can make in Subtitle Workshop...try.
This does not understand : what accents...what language is the subtitle ?
Sometimes not applicable how SW showing subtitle - Settings-Charset (adjust)...(I do not know which language (letter) subtitle) -
but it does not matter.Converted SSA test in player (GOM etc.)
Explain what he want with subtitles (except that changes color) why SSA,movie format, whether it is for PC or home DVD,if you plan to convert, burn (maybe hardcode subtitles) etc. -
Hi Thanks I saved the file as ssa in subtitle workshop and it seems to have worked.
I now find out out that to add a background I need to save it as a ass file which I have also saved in subtitle workshop. I'm now going to use subtitle edit to edit that file and add a black background on the 4 seconds that need it. Quite a lot of work for 4 seconds but I'm learning as I;ve only ever successfully used srt before. -
Hi I added "BorderStyle" to "3" ( = opaque box ) in the .ASS file which should hopefully make a wide outline and do the same as the background. I;ve used the srt merging program for so long I have to remember how to use autogk I think it was called to merge the subtitle with the ass file

If by 'background' you mean 'outline', then that's not true at all. You can easily edit the SSA file to do it yourself. You can use Notepad for the job.

Format: Name, Fontname, Fontsize, PrimaryColour, SecondaryColour, TertiaryColour, BackColour, Bold, Italic, BorderStyle,Outline, Shadow, Alignment, MarginL, MarginR, MarginV, AlphaLevel, Encoding
Style: Style1,Tahoma,60,12303291,8421504,0,0,0,0,1,2,0,2,10,10,60,0,0
And if you mean to add a rectangular box around the subs then, yes, border style set to three will do it.

OK thank you I save my ass file as ssa and then added 3 and 2 for the outline and rectangular box. Fingers crossed this will work- I'm going to work out which program to use to how to add the subtitle to the file now to see how it looks.

You can check immediately by playing the subtitle with the video. Just name it the same as the movie and it should play along. For example, Movie.mkv and Movie.ssa. I don't believe you've named the container and kind of video here, and it also might depend on the player you're using whether or not you can play the subs with the movie immediately.
Personally, I don't like the rectangular boxes around subs at all. Much better, in my opinion, is a simple 2-pixel black outline. But maybe you have your reasons for wanting to do it that way.
