I have the HD PVR 2 device.
When I try to capture with the device,i always get a big files.
What to do? Can i fix it?
I try to capture from my digital receiver (with component cable) and From my XBOX One (HDMI cable)
What to do?
Thank you

Lowering the bit rate and using variable bit rate encoding will produce smaller files, but will give you a lower quality result with less detail and more macro blocks. Take your pick. Larger files or worse quality. You can't have both.
5 minutes should not be 1GB. What are you recording? I recorded James Cameron's Avatar in HD with the Hauppauge Colossus using relatively high bit rate VBR encoding and it used about 7GB per hour. -

@Shlomi newpball enjoys misleading people to amuse himself. Ignore him.
Something very strange is going on. It should not be possible to capture 1GB in 5 minutes with the device you have, even HD video with audio. The HD-PVR 2 supports capturing H.264 video at 1 to 13.5 Mbits/sec. Audio is either re-encoded as 2-channel AAC or captured as is, if the STB outputs AC3. -
What???????? are you kidding me?
you think i am a liyer?

6 min is 634 MB -
I said something strange is going on, if a 5 minute capture from the HD-PVR 2 is 1GB. That is not the same thing as calling you a liar.
6 minutes @ 634 MB = 6.34 GB/hour. That is not unreasonable for a 720p capture, although it's a little higher than I'd expect from the HD-PVR 2. I took a look at one of my short 720p captures with the Colossus. 89.7 MB for 59.4 seconds. MediaInfo reports an overall bitrate of 12.7 Mbs
One of the complaints posted here about the HD-PVR 2 (from people who have one) is that the highest available bit rate setting for the encoder is lower than they would like.Last edited by usually_quiet; 11th Apr 2015 at 14:32.

You will need to experiment with the HD-PVR 2 encoder's bit rate settings using variable bit rate encoding. That is the only way I know of to find out how much you can reduce the file size while maintaining quality that is acceptable to you. SD files will probably use a lower bit rate than what you specify, if the Colossus is any example.
Your other choice is to use the highest bit rate setting possible for the HD-PVR 2's encoder during capture and re-encode to a smaller files size later using software.
Even though the HD-PVR 2 is using H.264, you are likely to find large capture files are necessary to faithfully record the video and audio. As an example, the US cable TV shows I am capturing are originally transmitted as MPEG-2. I recently got a CableCARD tuner (only works for US cable TV). This allows me to capture the original transmission. These files are sometimes smaller than my TV captures with the Colossus, in spite of the fact that the Colossus uses H.264, which is more efficient than MPEG-2.Last edited by usually_quiet; 11th Apr 2015 at 15:15.
