I have a video file that is a 2.6gb .avi file. It is 1440x1080 and 29 fps. It looks fine when I play it on my pc, but when I go to burn it to a dvd, it ends up looking whitewashed (the faces).
I used AVStoDVD and then Imgburn.

I also tried using Ashampoo- same result-whitewashed faces

    What did I do wrong?

  2. And you're blaming the burning programs for this?

How about when you play the DVD from the hard drive? Same thing? You said it looked fine on the computer but that was when playing the AVI and not the DVD, right? How about when you play the DVD from the burned disc in your DVD-ROM in the computer? Same thing? And when played in your standalone DVD player to your television? Same thing?

Maybe you could upload a small 10-second piece of a VOB for us to have a look?

And maybe post your AvSToDVD log file.

Well if you must go from HD to SD (which I personally find near sacrilegious) then you must make sure you:

    - respect the levels (e.g. PC levels vs TV levels)
    - provide legal levels (otherwise brilliantly engineered software may think something is PC level while it is not)
    - you must go from the Rec.709 to the Rec.601 standard.

Decently written software should do this more or less automatic but apparently something failed.

Plays whitewashed AFTER I burn it to DVD and watch the DVD on my PC. It plays perfect on the PC BEFORE being burned. So I feel that some setting has got to be off.
