Sanyo playback is in black and white

I haven't used my 1980's Sanyo VM-RS2 8 MM camcorder for some time. Recently I hooked it up to my Sony flatscreen via the RCA video/audio cords.(composite in)
and come to find out that it only play thru to the tv in B&W. I changed the cords. Still the same result. Also tried a 1980's older tv with the same B&W result.
Any suggestions as to why this is so?

Are both TV and camcorder using the same format, e.g. PAL or NTSC?

The manual for the Sanyo camcorder says:Television system:NTSC EIA
The manual for my Sharp TV says: TV Standard ATSC/NTSC System.

go into the camera's setting and see if there is some kind "DIGI- EFFECT" setting
which allows recording in different effects/colors like black&white ect.

There are no settings that allow different record types ie B&W vs. color etc.
Somewhere I read that the camcorder head may be dirty. Wonder if this is worth pursuing?
The B&W is very clear.

double check your connection, if you are using the yellow - red - white cables, the yellow cable goes into the yellow video in connector
and the red goes into the red audio in connector and the white goes into the white audio in connector.

Doubled check and no change, still B&W

try hooking the camcorder to a different / friends tv to see if it is the camera or your tv.
