  1. Hi there,

at first, i dunno if this is the right forum to get help, if not, please Mods move my thread to the right forum.

I'm trying to encode some vob files with StaxRip 1.1.9.0 (got some reason to use older version, but i think that doesn't matter to my problem, since i tried with newer version and got same error).
I'm indexing the vob files via the feature 'merge files' here is the log file of staxrip:

    Code:

This is the error StaxRip is throwing at me:

    Code:
    FFVideoSource: Can't open 'H:\dvd\ABSCHIED\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_1 temp files\VTS_02_1.d2v'
    (H:\dvd\ABSCHIED\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_1 temp files\VTS_02_1_Source.avs, line 2)
The whole setup was working well for me, for about 2 years. Now i recently needed some space on my c:\ drive and deleted and uninstalled some applications, seems like i removed one, which is needed by staxrip to work properly.

    Things i've tried:
    * Uninstalling and Reinstalling Avisynth
    * Copying dlls to the avisynth plugin directory
    * Uninstalling and Reinstalling Haali Media Splitter

I'm finished off with my latin and asking you what programs or dlls do i need to get StaxRip running again? I'm happy for every idea you got

Thanks in advance, let me know if you need any additional information from me to get things right again.

P.S.: Already tried to load the .avs in MeGUI, but it also resulted in an error, so i think it's not a generally staxrip problem, but has something to do with a missing program/plugin/whatever.

  2. If vob files are consecutively numbered as per your log file:

    VTS_02_1.VOB
    VTS_02_2.VOB
    VTS_02_3.VOB
    VTS_02_4.VOB
    VTS_02_5.VOB
    VTS_02_6.VOB

and you open the first one with DGIndex, it can automatically include the rest when indexing and treat them as a single file. Most encoder GUIs do so by default. MeGUI has an option to disable/enable that under External Program Configuration. I don't know about StaxRip as I don't use it.

    FFVideoSource: Can't open 'H:\dvd\ABSCHIED\VIDEO_TS\VTS_02_1 temp files\VTS_02_1.d2v'
That makes no sense at all as the VTS_02_1.d2v file is the index file created by DGIndex and FFVideoSource is attempting to open it. I think by opening the set of vob files with the "merge files" function you're confusing StaxRip. Try opening just the first one and hopefully StaxRip will index them as a single file with DGIndex. For the record, MeGUI would do the same by default.

  3. I tried to select a single file, but it doesn't select the other ones.
I've always done it the way with merge files and selected all the consecutively numbered files.

I think StaxRip just uses FFVideoSource since the other encoder failed.

Strange behaviour of selecting only one file is, that it seems to be working, but it has just the runtime of one vobfile.

    [edit]
It also seems working, when merging 2 files, but not with all of the files
    [/edit]

    [edit2]
I can't explain it myself, but StaxRip and MeGUI still working on other Vobsets, so i think my rip of the vobs is bad or smth similar. I'll try to rerip the files and report in afterwards

StaxRip generated an AviSynth file which uses DGMPGDec (DGDecode.dll) to load VTS_02_1.d2v; so there is no more reason to try to index any file with FFIndex because indexing was already done with DGIndex.

I wonder what stax76 could tell us about this issue...

I've changed this log message now solving macros so next time such a problem arises it's clearer what happened, DGMPGDec can't handle this VOB set for unknown reasons, best thing to do is trying to rip the DVD with MakeMKV.

Another solution would probably be to rip this DVD in "Movie/IFO mode" to either a contiguous "PGC VOB" file, or with "stream processing" = so that the main movie PGC gets already demultiplexed to the raw video (*.m2v) and audio stream(s); FFMS2 and L-SMASH Source are not able to handle VOB sets but should handle single input files correctly. This may require an NTFS partition, file sizes may exceed 4 GB; but this should be the default in this era.

By the way: DVDs ripped in "File mode" are often the reason why you get blatantly asynchronous audio streams: VOB files may contain several "program chains", e.g. publisher trailers in front of the main movie, which have different audio stream configurations. Some indexers may not recognize these delays correctly, especially when they don't care about IFO files. Extracting the main movie PGC only will skip such nuisances and should return an in-sync result (except for brief delays in case the audio stream was not perfectly cut during the encoding or authoring process).

I came across a few DVD structures where MakeMKV was the only way to get audio and subtitles in sync, one is Casino Royal if I remember right, I still keep the image in my sample collection. ffms2 has more issues with NTSC then DGMPGDec though.
