Installed all updates, but still doesn't work .
I'll be trying new stuff tomorrow. This has got to be the most persistent error I've ever seen in my entire life.

While I'm gone, would you guys please be so kind to continue posting solutions? I'll read them tomorrow.

Vreemd probleem. Funny that 0.96 works and newer versions don't. Handbrake switched to .NET 4 framework with 0.99.
Maybe worth trying to un-install .NET 4 (and .NET 4.5 if you have it) then re-boot and re-install.

Already tried. Nothing so far helped. And it was 0.95 that worked.

Any other ideas? Now I can't even install .net 4.0 again, it says that it failed.

  6. Try this
    1) go to directory C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET , find and rename folder assembly
    2) download and install Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Standalone Installer : http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=17718

Let's just assume my PC is cursed.
Let's sum this up: Before I started this thread, Handbrake did not work. Now .net doesn't work, either

Seems to be a be a system configuration problem. Is msconfig set up for Normal Startup or Selective Startup?

OK then we may be getting somewhere here. List and record/save all the functions in Selective Startup that are TURNED OFF.

In your case lets look at both Services and Startup. It might be a (more than likely) Services.

The last thing I would try is to startup in Normal mode instead of Selective mode and see what happens. Keep that list handy
so you can go back in case this doesn't work then you can get back to your original config. If this fails then the only thing I can
think of at the moment is Baldricks suggestion. A clean reinstall may be in order.
