  1. I upgraded to Handbrake 0.10.1. From .0.9.3. Since doing that, whenever I convert a digital movie from, say, MP4 to M4V, the audio comes out tinny, with this digital noise in the distant background. Doesn't happen to dvd rips. Can anyone help me resolve this? I use windows 7.

Which audio format are you using? AAC? If so, are you using AAC (avcodec), AAC (FDK) or possibly just the AAC passthrough if the original had AAC?

Personally I think Handbrake has screwed this edition, but for other reasons, mostly trouble with custom presets. I've been using VidCoder instead and have no issues. VidCoder is a different GUI for Handbrake.

  3. I use the Apple TV 3 preset. I'm not familiar with vidcoder.

That preset will use AAC (avcodec) by default. Import the file to be converted, then go to the Audio tab and change the default setting to AAC (FDK) and see if it helps. Or if your original file had AAC audio to begin with, you could try the AAC passthrough.

You can examine the original file with MediaInfo to see what type of audio is in it.

  5. Worked. Thanks. Weird how that happened, though.

I'm using a Mac but also using version 10, does the background noise sound like waves, blowing air down a metal pipe, swooshing noises or like waves crashing on the shore ?

If so , recently my m4v conversions have this issue. AAC fdk doesn't appear to be an option on version 10 in my case

  7. Why are you converting MP4 to M4V? It is the same container, just a different file extension.

Rename your file from FILENAME.MP4 to FILENAME.M4V and it will work. No re-encoding necessary.

  8. The noise happens with any conversion, MP4 or mkv. That's beside the point, it's the noise I'm concerned with.

  9. Actually, just had a problem with Handbrake (I use the nightly versions). My encodes would be half the size they should be and the picture was very pixelated.

Just ended up completely uninstalling Handbrake and reinstalling. Problem fixed.

    Hope that helps.

  10. Glad you fixed your problem. Numerous re installs have been done including going back to version 9, but that had its own issues. The problem here isn't picture, actually the picture is perfect as usual from Handbrake. The problem is the swirling wind/ wave sound in the background.
