  1. Hello everyone! Currently I'm looking to replace my old Sony AD5170A. It was an old but reliable and fairly great reader writer and etc but now his time to go came.

Sooo, now I'd iwsh to ask for YOUR advice - which exact model would you recommend me to take a look on?

My personal choice would be like Pioneer 111 series - quality of this model is just SUPERIOR (116 series is a worse choice but way better then 112-115 models), I also was told that LGs are pretty good too (only those which were made in Korea, NOT CHINA!!), ofc my old Sony AD5170A would be a good choice as well and probably I'd go with Sony NEC Optiarc AD-5200A.

There is only one thing about all those models - all of them are indecently OLD (06-07 date mufactured)

Any recommendations and advice will be highly appreciated!

    tnx!

Stop listening to stupid people. I use LG drives exclusively. I have 4 of them...all OLD(4040B, 2x4167B and an H58N) and none of them has failed completely(some still do things better than the other - one is a better/faster ripper, one burns better etc etc). I have no idea where each of them was made because it simply doesn't matter.

You are comparing the history of brands, so if it's history you are going by....they still make LG burners.
    http://www.newegg.com/CD-DVD-Burners/SubCategory/ID-5?Order=RATING
However....People like me are still buying used LGs and people are still buying used Pioneers.
DVD burners are dirt cheap now. If one gives you trouble, pitch it and buy another brand.
And I just now checked for the first time. My favorite all-rounder LG, the 4167B....made in China:

  5. DVD burners are so cheap now they're more of a commodity. It seems to me that it's been quite a while since we had a heated debate on the merits of various burners.

Good quality DVD burners (quality in the sense that, with good media, they produce very good burns with very low PIE, PIF and Jitter) are:

    - Unique BenQ ones, such as the DW 1640, 1650 and 1655

    - LG ones with a Renesas chipset

    - Sony Optiarc

Pioneer would be my #1 choice. I've also used LG. The LG is OK, but the Pioneer is better. I don't worry about models. If it says Pioneer, that's good enough for me.

I can't share any enthusiasm for Optiarc after my experience with the drive that came standard with my old iMac.

Historically some of the drives held in highest esteem over at MyCE were:

    BenQ 1640 (and variants)
    NEC 3500 series
    Pioneer 109-116
    Optiarc 7200A/S

LG's were known to be picky with mediocre media, but there were some outstanding drives from them from time to time. My old LG GGW-H20L Blu-ray burner turned out to be excellent with both DVD's and CD's, while only mid level with BD discs.

At this late date, there are no new DVD burners that are particularly outstanding. Any one of the half-height drives at Newegg from Lite-on, Samsung or LG will do ok. I don't think Pioneer still makes DVD burners, and their last few made by QSI stunk.

If shopping for an optical drive in 2015 though, I'd stick to either LG or Pioneer Blu-ray burners. More expensive, but seem to still be made reasonably well.

All my friends and I buy are Samsung drives and have not had any issues with them. I bought one Pioneer drive because of users advice that went out on me and a friend gave me another Pioneer that he had issues with but it's worked well for me for over 5 years.

At $20 or less, it probably doesn't matter too much as long as they have good reviews. I won't pay more than $25 or $30 for a DVD burner. For $70 or $80, it better burn Blu-Ray.

DVD burners are a dying commodity.

If you want to buy an optical drive burner I suggest you buy a Blu-Ray burner that supports M-Disk.

    My preference goes to LG.

What about 'Liteon' burners? I have always had good luck with them. I had nothing but grief with a Samsung burner, once, never again.

    -c-
Yes, no, maybe, I don't know, Can you repeat the question?

Of course you and your friends dont have any problems with Samsungs. How the hell on Earth you can have problems with something that doesnt even work???

That statement clearly indicates that you are not on a level when you are ready to pay for a quality and comfort and you dont really understand what it is.

Sometimes it happens. What can I say.

And that for a $15-$30 outdated commodity product!

    Hilarious!

  18. Yeahhhh, that was a REALLY exhaustive answer! Appreciate it!!

Well, It's still questionable to me about Pioneers models. May I ask you about your personal experience with 112-115 models? From what I know, comes the next thing: 112 - they read mediocre media pretty good, but they all die like in one-two years after they were purchased.
115 models... Well, I never met ANY positive response on them.

Yeah, always've been a problem - a perfect drive CANNOT be perfect with all types of media. But when it comes to LGs... Well. I truly believe last 5-6 years they do produce a quality stuff. Im sure we can find an LG fan even in this very thread nowadays.

I can do nothing but to agree. Many ppl say the very words like this. And that's why I decided to take a look on some used models.
Well, mostly because they already have some solutions fro known troubles and reviews which are nothing but a necessity to me in this case!!!

True, true, true. I didnt even look at them new models. No sense!!!

THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR YOUR EDUCATED RESPONSE!! WAS REALLY HELPFUL AND NICE TO LEARN SOME NEW STUFF FROM YOU!!!

Tnx for the heartwarming welcoming; dont really think I have too much time for exploring all those threads though.

And yeah, when you say 'cheap' you shouldnt forget about early Teac models, for instance. Yes, they are 'cheap'. But nobody's gonna sell you them to you for an obvious reason.

They are not "cheap". They are hard to find a good one. That one word makes a huuuge difference for those who is able to understand it.

But this thing is already a bit out of a topic.

I would appreciate it if you would stop making personal attacks.

    I suspect a doppelgänger.

It doesn't matter: just because I'm looking only at old ones.

As it was already said, there is no new good DVD burners in production anymore.

Well, and some other reasons too of course.

    That may be so.
You can certainly strongly disagree with my opinions on the topics I have not problems with that. However personal attacks and calling names are just wrong and hopefully also against posting rules. And come to think of rules, I hope there are also rules against excessive swearing

That's really a good point on what 'Good quality DVD burner' is

Appreciate that! I'll check all the information especially on those ones, BenQ models!

Have some heavy doubts on them Optiarcs though. They are more like a lottery, I guess.

Basically all that bullshit just makes you a good quality troll. But not a good person. Or a good person. Or whatever else good.

I'll tell you even more - on some weird reason I really do think all trolls are kinda momma boys living in a basement of their parents' house. And as I already said - I hate idiots. Cant do anything about it.

So I just want you to advice to shut your mouth up and keep away from my thread. Non of your services are really needed in here.

    Good bye.

This is a public forum where people can respond, if that is not your way you should resort to private emails instead of asking questions on a forum.
