Mozilla Seamonkey Email Problems in Win8.1

Mozilla Seamonkey mail works normally in WinXP as expected, but it seems to be all screwed up in Win8.1 64 bit. My email is from Charter which is IMAP and is setup exactly the same in WinXP as in Win8.1. However, in Win8.1 it gives error "Failed to connect to IMAP.charter.net server" when I open email as well as when I click "Get Msgs" tab which results in inability to get incoming email. Sending email works normally though,

Email settings in WinXP under username@charter.net has Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Junk, Outbox and Trash folders as it should with corresponding options to "Send mail to Trash folder when I delete," Move mail to Junk folder when marked as junk," etc. Email settings in Win8.1 under username@charter.net has only an Inbox folder, and the only choice to move deleted, junk, etc. mail is to Inbox folder. Are there bugs in Seamonkey mail for 64 bit Windows, or what could cause these problems?

You might mention which version of Seamonkey you have installed for Windows 8.1. Too bad the one person here at VideoHelp who I know uses Seamonkey is a Windows 8.x hater likely to tell you you should never, ever use Windows 8.x for anything. LOL.

I never tried Seamonkey, so I'll be of little help. I don't even use email software on a PC anymore since I do my email through free services with no ability to transfer email to a PC.

It's latest version of Seamonkey which is 2.33 version. I've also tried deleting the email account and creating it anew as well as uninstalling and reinstalling Seamonkey, but the problem persists. I like keeping certain messages on the PC to be able to view them offline which is why I like browser based email. I may give Thunderbird a try if I can't resolve the issues in Seamonkey.

I wonder if that Win8.x hater has actually tried Win8.1 or not. I too am not fond of the desktop that comes with Win8.1, but with Classic Shell installed you have a start button very similar to Win7 Win8.1 is faster than Win7 in startup and shutdown as well as launching apps faster. Personally I like Win8.1 better than Win7, and Win8.1 will be supported longer than Win7 because it's a later version of Windows. I have no opinion on Win8.0 because I never tried it, but I suspect Win8.1 is getting a unwarranted bad wrap due to Win8.0 issues that preceded it.

usually_quiet - Actually it IS possible with some of the major free email services to transfer your email to a PC. They just don't publicize it. And you'll have to use a 3rd party program (ie. Thunderbird) and not a web browser to do it, but it can be done with some of them. Basically you need experience setting up POP email clients to do it.

beviils1 - I'm not sure that I'd argue that Win 8.1 is all that much different from Win 8. People I know have had Win 8 and Win 8.1 and I wasn't really happy with either one. Just to provide even minor help to those people on what were simple tasks under Win 7 and below, I was always having to do a Google search to find out how to anything at all. My best friend, who is not a techie but periodically buys laptops for his small business, runs Win 8 because it came with the laptops he bought and he hates it. The first thing he did was run one of those add on shells for it. He still hates it, but he says it's barely tolerable with the add on shell.

But to try to help, I've never used Seamonkey but I have used Thunderbird. Thunderbird has worked reliably. I do want to warn you that if you have a lot of saved email, you'll find the 64 bit version works faster with large email archives. Yes, it's certainly possible that 64 bit Seamonkey has bugs, but you'll have to find some sort of official forum to ask at.

I did use Thunderbird at one time and know how to set up a POP email client, but the last time I checked, POP email required the paid version of these services. However, even if that has changed, I'm perfectly happy not downloading email. There is no need to pollute this thread by discussing my non-problem any further.

Just downloaded and installed Thunderbird. It's a bit different from Seamonkey email, but it's faster. I think I'll like it better once I'm used to it. I also decided to give Firefox a try since I now have to use a separate email client anyway, and Firefox is faster than Seamonkey all be it somewhat different and will take some getting used to.
