  1. not sure what to do here. I have CCE2.5 SP and am frameserving using virtual dub. I have winXP and 1.3G box.
whenever I do a one pass MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file CCE goes just fine. But whenever I do any kind of multipass encoding I get errors like above.
can not find vaf file??? Why does it have to have that right in the beginning anyways, I though that was something created during the encoding. so no vaf file and CCE won't even start. I have tried encoding only the vaf file and then trying the multi pass using that file and of course it failed miserably, thats when I get the CCE encoding failed and lots of other numbers.
any one able to do multipass encoding with CCE able to offer some advice   ?????

  2. I have had this problem a few times. From my knowledge, a vaf file is what CCE writes initially as to whereas the action or slow parts of the film are located. Its like construction of a graph that will tell the encoder later where to boost the bitrate or lower it.

Basically I just start fresh and get all of my settings banged out. Then If i encode I have no problems. If I ever get that error message I make sure the file doesnt already exist from a previous session, or just go into the settings and rename it to "file2.vaf" so it doesnt keep overwriting the same vaf file.

Let me know if you have resolved anything. I basically have the same system as you.

  3. What might be happening is that CCE aborts because of some other problem and so the .vaf file is never created, hence the error when CCE looks for it. I say this because I have had some similar problems where I get an error immediately after pressing the encode button in the form of a popup window with an ok button (actual error is "read only 0 bytes, while expecting 8 bytes") when I press the ok button, the second error you mentioned appears because the file wasn't created. I am still trying to find out what the first error means.

    Hope this helps.

  4. no, with my error I load up Vdub and then frameserve to CCE. In CCE I goto options and set to multipass VBR and then hit the advanced button, it then tells me no .vaf file found. well of course not, I have not even started yet and defintly have not created the .vaf file. not sure what is going on. to get it to work I just have to load the settings and don't hit advanced in CCE

    Please, please read the manual.
You have to create a .vaf file by doing a one pass encode, either one-pass VBR or CBR before you can use the advanced options.

  6. sorry, I did read the manual and did see that. but when I do a one pass and create the vaf and then goto advance and change something minor, the encoding fails because it says its changed. I did not change anything major (also found in the manual) so I am not sure.

I have been just setting bitrate and passes and then go and just forget about advance.
