  1. All,

If I edit out commercials with VirtualDub, then frameserve the resulting video to tmpgenc for mpeg2 encoding, should I have Direct Stream Copy selected for audio and video... or does that only matter if I'm re-saving the edited avi file? The reason I ask is that I'm having slight audio synch problems using this method, though I cannot tell if it is the edit, or the frameserve that is causing this (if I just encode the original avi, the audio is right on synch).

Thanks in advance for any help!

You should only enable Direct Stream Copy provided you are not using any filters in VirtualDub - If you use any filters in VirtualDub (audio or video) and enable DSC, the filters will no longer apply. DSC will not affect any deleted frames (or commercials) from being served from the stream.

If you are having sync problems, try encoding the audio and video separately, then multiplex the two files back together using bbMPEG when your finished.

Do you mean that if you use DSC it will not recognize the edits to remove commercials? DSC will simply pass through the original source avi and ignore any edits or filters?

No, DSC only affects filters. Removed frames are unaffected. ie: If you deleted frames 1000-2000, they are not passed through the frameserver.

  5. Thanks for the replies. How can I encode the audio and video seperately using tmpgenc? I can't seem to figure out how to do this in the settings. I don't understand why I sometimes have problems, and sometimes don't.... I'm using the same technique every time on the encoding as I described above. Would enabling DSC help with my audio synch problem? Thanks in advance.

On the main screen of TMPGEnc, at the lower right hand corner, there is a "Stream Type" box. Set all your settings, then choose "Video Only" and once the video is encoded, go back and choose "Audio Only".

After both of those are done, join them with bbMPEG.

Unless you are using filters in VDub, DSC for video and audio won't hurt it. So, nothing needs changing there. Set DSC, start the frameserver as usual and leave it alone.

In other words, if the a/v synch is good in VDub, then frameserving it to TMPGEnc won't bring it out of synch. Whether TMPGEnc is causing the desynch, thats yet to be determined (by doing a/v separately and joining with bbMPEG).

  7. Thanks for the reply Hilljack.... RIGHT after I sent that message, I saw the settings right in front of my face on the main screen. I was so busy looking in the menus, that I didn't notice it was in front of me the whole time! I figured out that my audio synch problem was actually in the avi itself.... for some reason, when I edited out the commercials in VirtualDub, then played the resulting show (in VirtualDub), the audio WAS in synch... though when playing the straight AVI file, or the resulting mpg file, it was out of synch. I added a delay of 200ms in tmpgenc, re-encoded, and this fixed my problem for now.

I'm now having another problem with the frameserving: when encoding to mpeg2 for SVCD, the motion gets very choppy and jittery. This never happened to me before (in svcd), frameserving or not. I can take the same frameserving session, and frameserve it to tmpgenc for mpeg1 for VCD, and it looks fine.... I do the same for SVCD, and it's all nasty choppy. Is there something I'm doing wrong? I'm not using any filters or anything. The problem seems sporadic.... I re-booted, started encoding again, let it go for about 30 seconds of video then stopped it. Checked the mpeg file and it looked fine, so I restarted the frameserving, and let it encode for the entire show, and it's all choppy again!! Thanks again for any advice.
