I went to a martial arts school, from 1998-2000 and had VHS training tapes that I now want to digitize to my PC and watch again. ( perfectly legal archiving )
I bought a DVD620KU from Sears, brand new for under $200 about a month ago, and started the process of dubbing to DVD with it, but after the 2nd of 6 tapes, the unit started making humming sounds in the audio and I had to return it. And now they're no longer available. ( I wanted an exchange and was told that, and then given a refund.)
But what about these analog to USB dongles I'm seeing? If I hooked one up to a VCR and my PC, would they actually work well?
I'm not interested in "upconversion" or any of that, just being able to store and watch my tapes on my PC.

A DVD recorder is much easier, but my main method of getting VHS to my computer is a USB dongle. I use the Hauppauge USB Live|2 and love it. Don't fall for a cheap $9 USB device either....they are complete CRAP. If your computer has descent specs, the quality USB devices work just fine. Oh and "upconversion" is always a bad idea. just stick to MPEG2/DVD type settings and you'll be fine.

Thanks hech54. This one?: http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_usblive2.html
It's not just the cost of that, but I don't even have a VCR anymore, so will have to find a decent unit, in as good a shape as possible, for as little money as possible. -
Yeah, that's the one. Amazon.com has it for about $36 with shipping.

I don't think Salvation Army sells stuff here, it's GoodWill, but I'll check, thanks.

One thing to remember about USB capture devices, make sure you read the installation instructions before doing anything. "Install drivers first....plug in device first before installing drivers....software first" etc etc etc. Doing it in the wrong order can be a true pain in the butt for a non-techie person.
