Hi.
I might have the term wrong. But how do I tell what mode the DVD or Blu-Ray optical drive is in? Is it called DMA mode? Is there a way to convert it back? Besides reinstalling windows and the hardware.
I can't remember how to check this. It wasn't in Computer - Manage or Computer - right click a drive - Properties - Hardware - Click a HDD - Properties.

You now find it under ATA/ATAPI Controllers in Device Manager.
It is set in the Bios not by Windows itself -
So I should uncheck enable DMA mode in the Advanced properties tab? For the IDE Channel?
Or go into the nVidia Force Serial ATA Controler, find the optical drive and uncheck let the BIOS select transfer mode and choose PIO mode? -
Is this a modern SATA drive? The Blu-Ray should certainly be SATA.

SATA MAKES THINGS EASY
Unlike PATA drives and interfaces, which may use various PIO and DMA modes, SATA drives and interfaces use only DMA mode. You don't need to configure settings manually. If the SATA drive is running at all, you can be sure that it's using optimum settings. They that give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety.

Why ?
I have not had an optical drive operating in PIO mode for years. IIRC it is much slower than DMA mode. -
Yes the blu-ray drive is SATA connected to the motherboard.
Some DVD's I purchased recently are ripping slowly. I thought this might be the problem.
Unless you guys have anything to add or more information, I think you two gave me what I was looking for.
Thanks.
