By three or four years, I think.

"The HDMI founders began development on HDMI 1.0 on April 16, 2002, with the goal of creating an AV connector that was backward-compatible with DVI."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI
"HDMI implements the EIA/CEA-861 standards, which define video formats and waveforms, transport of compressed, uncompressed, and LPCM audio, auxiliary data, and implementations of the VESA EDID.[2][3] CEA-861 signals carried by HDMI are electrically compatible with the CEA-861 signals used by the digital visual interface (DVI)."
DVI and HDMI both support HDCP. What encryption are you talking about?

"HDMI 2.0, referred to by some manufacturers as HDMI UHD, was released on September 4, 2013"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Blu-ray_Disc_and_HD_DVD_players
"The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) spokespersons have stated (Sept. 2014 at IFA show in Berlin, German) that the Blu-ray 4K/Ultra HD players and UHD discs are expected to be available starting in the second half to 2015. It is anticipated that such Blu-ray UHD players will be required to include a HDMI 2.0 output supporting HDCP 2.2."
"During 2014 several manufacturers introduced premium AV Receivers that include one, or multiple, HDMI 2.0 inputs along with a HDMI 2.0 output(s). As of this update, among the major manufacturers of AV receivers only Onkyo/Integra offers such AV Receivers that support both HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 as will be needed to support certain of the high quality 4K/UHD video sources, such as the upcoming Blu-ray 4K/UHD players."

You do whatever you like but I would recommend DisplayPort over HDMI any time!
And HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2?
Fools rush in!
Good luck playing deep color on your TV and good luck with backward compatibility! -
HDMI 2.0 is more like pie in the sky..... fools rush in...... and now the champion for moving forward while ignoring past standards and declaring all those in his way to be "stuffy" wants to talk about backward compatibility?
Is there a reason not to expect backward compatibility with HDMI 2.0? Is deep colour just going to stop working, or are you making stuff up again?
Should I wait until I can plug the HDMI 2.0 output on my player into the DisplayPort on my monitor, or is there an actual point you're trying to make that I'm not seeing? -
hello_hello - You should know by now that you're just feeding a troll.
Again, none of this crap that newpball argues about has any impact on the original poster's situation.
