  1. Hey all, just registered.

I'm currently capturing video from a Sony Handycam via Firewire transfer using WinDV. For my purposes, I really need the date and time stamp preserved on the video itself. Is this possible, perhaps with another program?

A quick google reveals this software:

You can do this for free with Avisynth and the DVInfo plugin.

  4. The last batch of DV tapes I did for tape-to-DVD, I used this program: https://www.videohelp.com/tools/DV-Datecode

Just feed it a DV-AVI file and it outputs the date code in various sub title formats.

Ummm.....folks. Instead of blabbing on about plugins and additional software(especially the ever-so-ridiculous, knee jerk blurting out of AviSynth)....how about mentioning the simple fact that the time and date stamp is usually a camera menu option?
Seriously. A first time poster and you recommend AviSynth?

hech54's idea is certainly spot on and easiest of all but if you already have a recording that didn't embed the date/time, might try another method IF the format is the same as mine.

The last files I worked with from a Sony Handicam were in MTS format and the subtitles (date/time) were PGS. I used TxMuxer to extract the times to a sup file and then OCR'd flawlessly with Subtitle edit. You can save it in any format you like and use that to add as subtitle or burn in hardcoded.
