Ok so VHS has time base errors (something I will have to google) but these errors shouldn't prevent a very good device from capturing? That's kinda what I am understanding from your post. Which when I think about it might account for some reviews of different capture devices having problems with VHS.

I am not familiar with these video labels but I do know (since I obtained one) that various commercial VHS were recorded in LP mode.

That can be another issue since LP tapes are well known to misbehave in any VCR other than the one they were recorded on.

All the tapes except the one recorded on the video camera from way back in the day are in SP mode. I am thinking it's the device itself. I've tried different compressions as well since Sabrent says that can cause issues with the image.

  5. One more thing to try: high speed fast forward the tapes to the end then rewind back to the start. That will even out the windings and provide less drag during playback. That might help a little.

Well that is an idea I had not thought of. I'm a bit snowed in at the moment so I can play around with this a little more before sending the device back. At least Tigerdirect.com is being really cool on refunding this purchase.
