    Greetings .....

My Western Digital Elements 640gb usb external hard drive (which is at least 3 years old, if not 4) is not properly responding when plugged into either my desktop or laptop.

When plugged in, I get this message "Microsoft needs to format drive x: for use. Do you wish to format?" I of course say no.

I've checked both my desktop and laptop for virus-malware, and both are OK.

Seeking data recovery software options -- either the best freeware, or the best and lowest reasonable costing trialware.

My plan is recover what data I can, then transfer to a newer drive.

    Greetings

Thanks to all replies so far.

    Miracle has occurred ---

With just a basic scan and no other action, Data Doctor's DDR software seems to have triggered a positive response, and the drive is ACTIVE NOW. Currently getting files over to new location.

    Thanx-A-Lot, Frank
