SO my boss has given me a new company computer running windows 7 and a brand new Canon XF100 camcorder. Both machines are great except now I need software to edit the MXF format video. NO I DO NOT RUN MAC PRODUCTS. So everything needs to be windows based. HELP please before I loose my sanity. -Gregg

All the main NLEs can handle it.

  3. By "all the main NLEs" we're really talking Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, Vegas Pro and possibly Edius. You want an NLE that can understand and import the entire card structure, not simply individual files.

  4. And any editor that doesn't recogonize the extension .MXF will probably recognize it if you change the extension to .MPG.

Yeah, .MXF is simply a standard Mpeg in a fancy wrapper. Mpeg is about as "standard" as you can get.

His camera shoots MPEG2, but MXF can hold other types of video

AVC-Intra is the other fairly common type of professonal recording format that comes in MXF, DNxHD can as well

Yeah, I mis-spoke. I know that MXF is an exchange container, and could have other stuff in it, but I left that part out. I mostly use it to do prerenders in Vegas.

If you're a one-man-band, and need to do a plethora of different scenarios, like compositing, Vegas Pro is a good choice.

I use Vegas Pro myself, and have yet to get "stuck" not being able to accomplish something. And you can extend it with BorisCC as a plugin. That would practically eliminate the need to buy After Effects.

On the other hand Premiere and AE are widely used in the industry and there's lots of outside vendors.
