  1. Hello everyone, I'm looking for a device (not more expensive than 60-70€) to capture my old VHS tapes. Unfortunately, it can't be a PCI card, since my current PC doesn't have an empty PCI slot. I tried to google a bit searching for top lists, but I have only found lists focused in capturing console video games, so I thought that it would be better to ask here.

I only know that the Pinnacle capture cards I used in the past decade always worked great, then, around 2009-2010 I got an Avermedia USB device, which was great for watching and recording digital TV, but didn't satisfy me with VHS capturing. As of now, I'm undecided about what to buy, there might be even new companies dedicated to video capture I don't know about, so that's why I would appreciate your guidance.

I love my Hauppauge USB Live|2, but I'm not sure how it is different from what you have as far as "quality" goes. I can make some pretty crappy captures with the wrong VHS machine and the wrong capture settings/codecs too.

  3. I was actually considering buying a Hauppauge device (WinTV-HVR-1975, more concretelly), since Pinnacle doesn't seem to be that active anymore and buying an Avermedia device again might be a bit risky since it could use a similar chipset as the one which gave me problems (basically, it added some "green noise" to the images of several VHS tapes I have).

I have checked the device you mention and it's got great reviews in Amazon, plus a reasonable price. I will see what I do... thanks!

It's more than you want to spend, but the Grass Valley ADVC55 does a fine job if you have a IEEE 1394 port on your computer. It encodes DV, which is not as compressed as the MPEG formats that cheaper converters use.

Pinnacle sold their PCTV Systems division to Hauppauge. Pinnacle apparently kept the "Dazzle" capture product line. The Pinnacle software that comes with some of the Dazzle products can be problematic. Dazzle products are not popular with VideoHelp's membership.

The WinTV-HVR-1975 has a hardware encoder chip, which can only output MPEG-2 video. Some people find that convenient. Other people who want to correct various VHS-related problems using software after capturing prefer a capture device that encodes using software so that they can capture to a less-compressed format.
