  1. Not having had much joy with Sony's own forums, I'm hoping an experienced user here might be able to suggest some answers (I've already searched the forums but without success).

    - 1. Capturing HD video into the capture function of Vegas means I have good audio but cannot view the video stream in the software. However, VLC Media Player plays the captures - with both audio and video - correctly. I'm using the latest video card drivers and Quicktime, and am at a loss to find out why Vegas cannot properly display its own captures. The spec from the captures is:

The caps are from the Sony HDV Handycam HDR HC1E (PAL). MediaInfo shows:
    .m2t extension
    Container and general info:
    MPEG-TS (HDV 1080i): 88.7MiB, 28s 400ms
    overall bit rate mode: variable
    overall bit rate: 26.1Mbps
    maximum overall bit rate: 33Mbps
    1 video stream: MPEG video
    1 audio stream: MPEG audio

    First video stream:
    24.5Mbps, 1440*1080 (16.9), at 25.000 fps, MPEG video (Component) (Version 2) (Main@High 1440) (CustomMatrix / BVOP) (HDV 1080i)
    First audio stream:
    384 Kbps, 48.0 Khz, 2 channels, MPEG audio (Version 1)(Layer 2

    2. I've previously been able to capture DV video with no problem in Vegas but have found that now, once I chose DV as the video type, the VidCap capture window (part of the Vegas package) no longer launches. (The software is fully updated, by the way.)

I'm running Windows 8.1, which is supposed to be compatible with Vegas 10.

Any suggestions on how to fix Vegas so it can view and use its own captures and also to capture DV video again would be very welcome.

Had a quick look at this camera.

It appears you have to install a driver (should be provided with the camera) to transfer your video to your PC. This is NOT the video driver for your PC.

The page mentions Windows 8 but not 8.1

Sounds also like you cannot decide or get a handle on what you're trying to use: HDV is NOT DV.
    HDV = HD, MPEG2 video + MP2/LPCM audio in MPEG-TS container.
DV = SD (in these capture instances), DV video + LPCM audio in NO container (raw) or in MOV, AVI, or MXF container.
The only outstanding similarity is they both can be captured on tape and they both are ~25Mbps bitrate.

The HDR HC1E is an HDV cam (and the MediaInfo corroborates that - BTW, you should use the detailed report, that summary version is almost useless here). You cannot capture (nor view) HDV with the DV capture module (nor vice-versa). IIRC, there is a switch in preferences where you choose between the 2.

    Scott,

I took the mediainfo report to be the captured video and not the source ??

My interpretation of Sony's site is that you transfer the recorded video with the cable (after installing the Win8 driver) - might need their software as well and just do editing in Vegas.

  5. Apologies for not being able to reply sooner. Many thanks for the helpful posts. Here is the current state of play, which I hope will help anyone else in the same boat:

In desperation, I downloaded the trial version of Sony Vegas Platinum 13 and when I tried to launch the HDV capture function, it didn’t work – but with an error message that v10 did not display saying that ‘MSVCR71.DLL could not be found’.

I searched online for solutions to this and found advice on doing a System File Check in the Run window so that Windows would automatically update files that had any issues. After doing it, the post said to reinstall the affected software, which I did and, lo and behold, the HDV and DV capture functions both worked correctly generating files with audio and video that played inside Vegas.

    DB83: Thanks for the suggestion.

Cornucopia/Scott: Sorry for the confusion. My main issue was with HDV capture but I added in the DV problem as I’d noticed that, since starting to capture HDV for the first time, this function also had become faulty. Yes, the camera was configured correctly for the captures for each attempt. Noted on using the ‘detailed’ version of the MediaInfo report in the future.

    Thanks again for your help.
