    Hi, I am new to this and not too savy. We have many family (no copyright) DVD's that are becoming a hassle to store. So I bought the Magnavox Recorder thinking I could put the DVD in the recorder, and copy it to the Internal Hard drive. But I see no directions on how to do this. Before I bought this I asked and was told I could copy a DVD to the Hard Drive, so <supposedly> it can be done.

    Thanks for any/all suggestions!

  2. It's on page 60 of your manual -- dubbing DVD->HDD
    http://www.m4c.magnavox.com/files/m/mdr535h_f7/mdr535h_f7_dfu_aen.pdf

    But this is not a good long-term solution. What happens when the unit fails? You are much better off ripping your DVDs to an external hard drive as isos or even simple DVD folders and making an extra copy of that.

    I don't know what results you are hoping for, but there are some drawbacks to doing this.

    First, you won't be able to save the menus from the DVDs to the recorder's hard drive. You can manually title the dubbed recordings, but they can't be organized. You also won't be able to transfer recordings from the hard drive without dubbing to DVD again. The recorder's file system was intentionally designed to make it difficult to copy recordings in any other way

    Also be aware that the recorder's HDD can't be removed and played with a PC, or media player if the DVD recorder stops working. The recorder's file system won't allow you to play recordings on the HDD using something other than the DVD recorder that made them.

    I do. Americans for some years now have been completely and utterly obsessive compulsive (OC) about "clutter". Women are really really bad about this. 90% of the time this is coming from women, so the real truth is that the OP's wife is constantly bitching about it and he's tired of the constant complaints. He's just trying to find a way to make his wife get off his case and this was the first idea he came up with that might be easy to do.

    I work in IT and one of my few female co-workers is currently forcing her husband to rip EVERY CD and DVD they have and store it on hard drives. As far as I can tell they have no backup plan and no storage array - everything is just on one hard drive or another. I know that one day one of those disk drives is going to die and they're going to lose everything on it, but she should know better about backups so when it happens, I'm not going to be surprised. But she will be.

    I've had personal experiences with my step-mother and a former girlfriend being all OC about clutter too. What was kind of funny with my girlfriend was that she was a bit of a pack rat, but her to everything I owned was all trash while everything she had was precious. This kind of "My stuff is valuable and your stuff is crap" attitude is more common than you might think and plays a role in women demanding that their husbands/boyfriends get rid of discs in the house.

    Anyone who wants to store videos (and audios) only on a hard drive (especially a SINGLE hard drive) is a moron.

    I've got a friend, not female, who insists on keeping things on thumb drives and computer hard drives. I keep telling him he's got to burn the stuff to discs, but he can't see it. He's even had hard drives crash and take LOTS of photos with them, and he still doesn't get the point. (No, it's not his wife in this case...it's actually him.)

    Yeah, we're friends, but as far as this is concerned, he's a moron.

    Added point-
    I've got one of the Magnavox recorders. I would NEVER keep precious stuff on the drive only. Those drives can't be read on a computer, so if the machine dies, you can't rescue your stuff. DO NOT keep videos on a Magnavox recorder's hard drive. BURN THEM TO DVD.

    Corny...

    If you meant my calling a friend a "moron", let's face it. If someone keeps putting their hand on a hot stove, if you care anything at all about them, at some point the kindness and attempts at reasoning end and you want to shout "What are you?!?! Stupid or something? Cut it out, you keep getting BURNED!!!"
