Hi there,
For years I have been using cineform as an intermediate codec, but for some reason it is acting up with my win8.1 installation - and also gives problems with Premiere Pro (known problem). I tried Miraizon (which work great in After Effects), but it doesn't work with Premiere Pro - bummer. So right now I'm using UT Video, the lossless codec - which works great, but I'd like to find a similar codec, but lossy (so it doesn't create that big files) - a new intermediate codec if you wish. Is there something out there like that?
Greets,
T

If something is acting up, you fix it, don't ignore it.

Miraizon is a company/brand. There is no "miraizon" codec. They make versions of the prores & dnxhd codecs, usually as Quicktime encoder components. You can use theirs or others'. If they are showing up in AE but not Premiere, again you have a problem that needs fixing.

The 3 commonly supported near-lossless codecs are cineform, prores & dnxhd.

You can find things that are more lossy but still reasonable in quality: DVCPro50/DVCPro100, MPEG2-Iframe, AVC-Intra (the last 2 vary the quality with the bitrate chosen). Other than those, or maybe JP2k or MJpeg, I think you're running out of good, multiplatform options. What you really DON'T want to do is be stuck with a proprietary codec that only works with one platform & workflow.

I use the Grass Valley (Canopus) HQX codec. Excellent quality and similar files sizes to Cineform. (See here for details on the codec:

 http://www.grassvalley.com/products/hqx_codec ).

If you don't want to register for the free account with Grass Valley - which you need to do to download the codec pack from that site - the Canopus Taiwan site has a slightly earlier version of the codec pack for Windows7 or 8 available here:
