What is your favorite aspect ratio for video?

My favourite tends to be the same aspect ratio as the display of the device I'm using at the time.

Some aspect ratios are better suited for particular viewing environments.

I did however think about it, and 2:1 seemed like it might be a nice aspect ratio (I'm not a fan of really wide aspect ratios) and on a whim I plugged it into Google. Much to my surprise, it's an actual format. Hardly used, so maybe I can be forgiven for being ignorant of it. Maybe it's never taken off because the name really sucks. Univisium

I don't think wider aspect ratio TVs will ever be mainstream, but I've been wrong before. The reality is though, there's only so much space in the average living/family room for a TV and for larger size screens, wider aspect ratios are probably less practical.

I think a 4:3 frame is flattering when shooting people's faces up close or the upper part of the body because in a wider frame such as 16:9 they often look kind of lost and the attention can be drawn away from them (well, maybe not so much if you use a very shallow depth of field to prevent that, but try that with a regular camcorder in an interview situation).

As for 2.35:1, as long as the "creator" makes creative use of it. If not, I crop off the sides in my media player to obtain 16:9 which is my favorite.

I remeber a dialog between two people shot through a cars front window and it was like watching a ping pong game.

It does sound like a silly poll but I do not think that was the OP's intention.

Maybe not the OP but there are guys out there who have never witnessed a CRT tv or even an academy ratio film.

Yet there are even film-makers who simply throw 'width' at their subject without cause or consideration for the content.

I like the screen 'full', but might miss something of the cropped portion of 'scoped movies/vids. Next tv will be 60" or larger, I think 2.35/2.39/2.4:1 (whatever) will become a non-issue then. (have a 7-8 yr old 42" Olivea)
I have seen a (very) few old 4:3 movies cropped to fill 16:9/185:1, a terrible thing to do, , ,

No of course it was not.

I assume people on this forum do make videos, I am sure they thought about aspect ratios as well.
But perhaps that is terribly naive of me?

Even if the recording device has a given AR it does not mean you cannot make a composition with a different AR in mind and crop it in post.

I've been shooting and editing in 16:9 since 2003. Interestingly enough a regular client dropped off a hodgepodge of video sources for me to put on a dvd. It included HD 1080i, Gopro 1280 x 960, cell Phone video with various orientation, and SD widescreen.

It was a PIA resizing and rotating various sources to get a steady 16:9 dvd out of it. Thank goodness for tools like ffmpeg to make it sooooo much easier...

I think that picking an aspect ratios is an important parts of videography.

I suppose most posters here are either completely clueless about that or have zero experience making videos.

I prefer 2.40 : 1 to film people in their surroundings because I think it is just high enough to fill enough vertical information. For landscape I would prefer even wider.
