I just converted a 1080i file to 720p with Handbrake, and the resulting video has visible pixelation. The video is a 2D animated film. I used Constant Quality 20, which I understood to be pretty good quality, and the Animation tune.

File size went from 7.68 GB to 1.77 GB. I thought 1.77 GB was a decent file size for a 79-minute animated video, so I don't think bitrate is an issue. Sceenshots below.

What do you think I should tweak to get rid of the pixelation?

  2. The obvious thing you can do is use a lower CRF value, which will result in larger filesizes

But handbrake seems to have deinterlaced and converted it to 720p50. Unlikely that an animated feature would be interlaced to begin with. It's probably encoding duplicate frames , not as efficient . Most animated cartoon features will originate as "24p" , but might have duplicates to begin with as part of the animation. There might also be other issues since the source is apparently 1080i25 - where was it from?

It's an HDTV rip from a PAL country.
