Connecting HDMI cable to my player laptop problem with HD

So when I connect HDMI and it's only connected to laptop on the one end , the laptop stars freezing and pixilating. This is even before i connect to TV. When I disconnect the HDMI and restart the movie , the laptop plays it fine on the laptop only. I have no problem playing 720 movies thru the HDMI to TV. Just problems with HD/Blu-ray downloads when HDMI is connected. I am using Dell Inspiron 1121 with Windows 7 64 bit, Intel Core i3 U330 processor and VLC media player. Easy on me, I ain't no techie.

Is it the video that starts freezing? Or the computer/windows?

If just video try another player like mpchc,potplayer.
