  1. I recently captured video both using Quicktime/Final Cut Pro and WinDV on windows 7 and noticed that Quicktime on my mac has two audio streams instead of one. ADDITIONALLY, it appears that the file size of Quicktime .mov capture is 2 times what it is for WinDV doing an .avi capture. I have uploaded the MediaInfo specs of my video. Could someone be able to tell me what is going on? Thanks!

First thing you should know: using the BASIC view output of MediaInfo rarely gets to the heart of the matter. In almost ALL cases, you should use something like the TREE view (sometimes even in advanced debug mode). While you're at it, you should also post TEXT outputs (better copying, less size, parseable/searchable) not screencaps.

Next, Since those aren't exact copies of the same segment & length of the same clip, this is going to have to be a bit more of a guess, but here goes:

This is probably an example of the difference between a DV Type1 capture and a Type2 capture. WinDV gives you the option of capturing in either type.
FCP (which is based on QT or AVFoundation) does not - all QT-based captures are Type2 if they save to standard .MOV container. If they are Raw DV streams (such as is captured by iMovie), they are Type1, but that is the only exception. The QT .MOV file format doesn't allow for DV IVAS stream designations, only VIDS and AUDS (and TEXT, MIDI, etc), or external private streams (such as in MPEG).

I've posted at length about this topic before - just do a search on this site.

From just this superficial look, I'd say your WinDV file is Type1 and your FCP/QT file is Type2. No surprise there.

There's also the possibility of the VDVA (~audio via video) QT bug making the size huger.

  3. So from what I understand am I correct to say there is no way QT/FCP can capture better quality video than winDV?

DV is DV. Assuming you are following general best practices (firewire capture), the file quality will be identical between platforms (Win, Mac), between types (Type1, Type2), between File formats (RAW .DV, .AVI, .MOV, .MXF) and between the HDD file and the camera/tape stream source. If they are both doing it right, how can one be better. If A (cam) = B (windv avi) and A = C (fcp mov) then B = C!
