  1. I have downloaded several video files from various peer to peer applications and i am having trouble playing these files in my windows media player. All these files have .avi extensions and i have downloaded a divx codec from divx.com, i don't know if i have the wrong codec or what? One of these files uses divx codec for video compression and windows media audio V2 for the audio format and the video plays just fine but i have no audio at all. the other file uses ms-mpeg4-V2 for video compression and mpeg layer 3 for audio format and when i try to play it i get an error saying the file format is invalid.

Try downloading the Krystal Studio Pack codecs (you can find them in the tools section of this website).

  3. I am having the same problem. All files claim to be avi but I get 3 different results when I try to play in WinMedia Player:
    1. AVI plays ok
    2. Media Player downloads a codec from MS site but says it didn't work.
    3. Media player reports that no decompressor could be found

Tried the suggestion above but the link to Krystal codecs could not be found. The suspect files also will not load into TMPGen for conversion. Any other suggestions on what is going on / how to fix?? Thanks!!

  4. navi codec for avi, available at http://www.smr-usenet.com

DivX 3.11 alpha codec for avi, available at http://www.divx-digest.com

DivX4 codec for avi, available at http://www.divx.com

installing these will clear up most avi playing problems. be sure to read the info provided with each to be sure to install it properly. the advice aldus offers is equally as good but i prefer the individual codecs myself over a bulk packing, i have not heard anything bad about krystal but angelpotion taught me its better to go for the individual codecs.

  6. per dumwaldo I tried the codec links. Got the 2nd and 3rd ok but didn't find the navi codec at the link provided. Is there an alternate source or can you point me to how I missed it on smr link? Thanks.
