Anybody who has the dvp2880, did you bother getting the latest firmware from philips? I feel like whatever it came with stock seems fine but if there is some noticeable improvements with newer firmware then ill probably wanna get it.
Also, unrelated to the firmware question, what does the HDMI deep color setting do? I have it turned on and I think it might be making the colors more vibrant?
Thanks and to those considering buying the 2880, I would definitely recommend. Region free, good upscaling, and just a great value for the price.

If the player is currently region free, ANY firmware update will very likely remove that capability PERMANENTLY. Think very carefully before you upgrade.
In general, Philips firmware updates rarely have any fixes that the majority of users need. They're usually things like additional subtitle support for file play mode. Unless you have a specific problem you have to have fixed and you know a firmware update fixes it and you are willing to live with losing region free mode, I don't recommend applying ANY firmware update to ANY player. Period. -
thanks jman, really appreciate it. I figured Id ask cause I was thinking the same thing about new firmware possibly taking away the region free ability. Back with my 5990 I put on new firmware but it was "custom" from vb6rocrod... guess the days of cool firmware like that where it would give you longer filenames in the browser for divx movies etc. are pretty much long gone. Oh well, but hey thanks again... I wont mess around with any firmwares... gotta remember if it aint broke dont fix it with these newer Philips players. One more thing though, I'm still wondering what the HDMI deep color setting does?

I have no idea what the deep color setting does.
The days of 3rd parties providing custom firmware are dead. I haven't heard about that in years.
