  1. Greetings,

I ordered an HDMI splitter last summer that strips that HDMI protection and I would like to use it with my Cisco STB to capture recorded shows. The portion of my setup I am missing is the capture device and I am hoping someone can suggest what works best. I would like to store the recorded shows on my server after removing the commercials.

So to be clear, I am connecting the HDMI splitter to the output of my STB, one HDMI cable from the splitter to a TV, another to a capture device. Then I would copy the captured media to my PC strip the commercials and put the output on my server to watch at a later time.

    Regards.

    I use this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Blackmagic-Design-Intensity-Analog-Editing/dp/B008BMIBDC/ref=sr_...s=capture+card

However, very stout computer needed and file sizes can be extremely large.

Any of the following would work for what you want to do: Hauppauge Colossus, Hauppauge HD PVR2, AVerMediaAVerMedia C285 Game Capture HD II, or ElGato Came Capture HD. They all have hardware H.264 encoders so their capture files would not require an excessive amount of space to store.

It comes with its own of course. I have read that it works better with AmaRecTV and maybe Virtualdub would work. Since it uses software for compression, there may be other good options for capture too. However, capturing HD video using lossless compression is not for everyone. Files are indeed enormous. Capturing HD video using lossy compression like MPEG-2 or H.264 would require a more powerful CPU.
