  1. It's been a while since I used VirtualDub (1.9.11) in earnest so I'm rusty about specifying its settings. But after an hour or so of trial/error I can't get several files to play their audio content properly and I'd appreciate some help in discovering why please.

    Here's an example:

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/1p8np7obj29m587/TestStuttering.AVI?dl=0

(It's 31 MB; I'd have made it much shorter but I wasn't confident how to edit it without risking some other change that might muddy the water.)

P.S: I can successfully play that file (web source long-forgotten) in video players such as WMP, VLC and MPC-HC.

If the playback problem is only within VD, maybe not a problem as long as the edited version plays properly in a regular software player. Editors like VD don't need to have smooth playback to function properly.

  4. VirtualDub is an editor. It's not optimized as a media player. If your computer isn't fast enough to process the video in real time audio and video will stutter.

  5. OK, thanks all, appreciate the quick replies. It must be a performance issue then.

I have my default filetype for AVI set to VirtualDub on this XP PC. These two or three files I hit on this morning are the first I can recall giving me that stuttering behaviour. I'll either switch to MPC-HC or remember this limitation when it happens again.

FWIW, VD File > File Information reports this:

Isn't it strange that only the audio suffers?

No. If the video decoding is too slow the audio has too pause (or repeat) in order for the video to catch up.

    Understood, thanks.

  8. Try using the "Drop frames when behind" and/or "Sync to audio" options.

  9. With both options enabled the audio improved but video became jerky.

Reckon I'll leave it and simply use MPC-HC or VLC whenever I hit problems playing an AVI.

    Thanks for the help.
