  1. Hi everyone!

I have a number of hi-8 tapes I am looking to get converted into digital format. I have used devices like the Canopus ADVC-110 in the past but constantly had problems when my video would have breaks (the blue screen) in between scenes. The Canopus would actually stop the feed when it sensed a blue screen and hence I had to constantly sit by the machine and start it up every time the scene changed. Fast forward a year later, I now have a much larger budget for converting my 50 some hi-8 tapes. I currently have a Sony Handycam that has a firewire output. I am looking to buy the AVT-8710 as I heard it offers TBC. However, I am a bit confused as to how I would even connect them.

What confuses me is that the AVT-8710 only allows an S-Video to S-Video interface, so if I am playing the tape on the Handycam and have the video being transferred out via firewire, where would the AVT even fit in (since the feed is already digital and the AVT is an analog I/O)? Also, if I am using the AVT, it doesn't seem to transfer the audio so where would the audio go? Would anyone know of a setup where I can use the AVT with my Handycam before sending the stream via firewire to my firewire to thunderbolt mac converter? I apologize in advance if any of these questions seem stupid or newbish and would greatly appreciate any advice! Thanks!!

  2. If your Sony Handycam has firewire output and plays your tapes it is most likely Digital8 and most likely has a built-in TBC and you won't need an external box. (Model numbers would help.)
