Hello,
I've got some multi-generational Betamax tapes recorded in Japan and am looking for a decent external TBC that supports NTSC-J (NTSC/0.0IRE). There are some nice TBCs introduced here, but I'm not sure whether nor not they support NTSC-J footage. Can anybody shed light on this?
Thanks.

From the AVT-8710 manual:
As an example of how the auto-detect works, if you live in the United States or Japan, the input will be the NTSC 3.58 Standard and the unit will light the “A” LED and the “N” LED. -

[QUOTE=kei17;2367064] Are most TBCs clever enough to black-crush NTSC-J? Why would they try so hard to only let exactly the right range of voltages through? I'm in PAL land, so I don't know, but I would hope that most allow a little headroom (at both the black and white ends of the range) to cope with slightly out-of-spec footage without ruining it. This would mean that NTSC-J would be well covered even if not "officially" supported.
But I could be completely wrong.
Cheers,
David.
