  1. I was recommended the free VLC player. I tried it out today. I noticed that it plays chapters. I have not noticed this with other programs before. But I noticed that only certain video files such as mp4, or mkv and one other type (I forgot which) had chapters imbedded inside the video file.

So is it the VLC player or the codecs? How I happened to rip the video? (I ripped these when trying a trial copy of DVDFab).

The chapter information is stored in the container(mp4,mkv). I think dvdfab adds chapters information automatically.

You can manually add chapters to a mkv with a multiplexer like mkvmergegui or chaptereditor, MKV Chapterizer, etc. For mp4 use mp4box.
