  1. Ok, so as an English fan of American sports I was after a DVD player which I could watch my region 1 baseball DVDs as well as Region B Blu Rays so plumped for this model after reading that it can be made region free by doing the following;

    1. With no DVD in the player
    2. Press the REPEAT button
    3. Press 57538
    3. The current player's region code will display at the top left of the screen
    4. Press 9 on your remote to change the region to open-zone
    5. Turn the player off and back on.

After almost 3 hours of repeating the above action and nearly having a nervous breakdown to boot, I finanly gave up before I put my foot through the machine.

My question is, if this is built into the firmware why won't it just work, I can't understand how it can work for some and not others? I only bought the machine two days ago, could that have anything to do with it? Is there an alternative way of unlocking this machine? Has anybody got a video of making this actually work that I could follow?

I'm absolutely gutted at the moment as I have about 500 bloody DVDs I can't watch!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For future reference, don't ever buy Samsung or Sony players if you need region free.

Hacks may fail for various reason such as
    1) Because of hardware differences the hack only works on a player sold in another part of the world, such as Australia.
    2) The hack did work in the past, but your player has an updated firmware that breaks that hack. Short version - Hollywood puts pressure on the manufacturers to eliminate hacks via firmware updates. This happens a lot.
    3) The hack information is leaving out absolutely critical information such as another step and it won't work without it. Such things are rare but they do happen.

If you need a region free player, the only safe thing to do anymore is to buy from a seller who has hardware modified the player to be region free at extra cost to you. It's now a waste of time and money to expect to be able to unlock a store bought player by entering a code.

New player? Samsung BD-D5100 is a 2011 model. The newest Samsung equivalent is the BD-F5100.
There are no (working) hacks for the BD-D5100.
The only reliable way to get a Region Free BD player now is to buy from a specialist shop like Multiregion Magic in the UK, and you're looking at £150 upwards. The days of easy remote controller hacks are pretty much gone.

  5. It is the 2011 model then, i just meant I bought it brand new. With it being an older model should that mean I should be able to remote-hack it then?

Unfortunately, like most newbies you are missing the point because you really want to unlock your player.

This is point number one - if you want region free, DO NOT EVER buy Sony or Samsung.

SOME older Samsung models could be unlocked by a code. "Some" does NOT mean "most". It means "a handful". There were maybe 2 or 3 Samsung BD players that could be unlocked in the past, but I'm not sure if more than 1 of those was ever sold in Europe. So the odds of you being able to unlock an older player are not zero like they would be with a new model, but they're also not more than 50% either. We have some guy from Norway who shows up every now and then just to argue with me. Apparently he bought the only Samsung player that could be unlocked in recent years and he keeps telling people that they can for sure unlock their Samsung players when in fact the odds are high that they can't. He can't post without taking a shot at me, so if he comes to this thread later, you can try what he says, but do you need to accept the very real possibility that you won't be able to unlock the player. If you can take it back for a refund and buy from Multiegion Magic, that would be better. And do note that if Samsung or Sony players are sold by Multiregion Magic, they've been hardware modified so they should be OK to buy if you must. I just keep it simple in saying not to buy Samsung or Sony because both basically can no longer be unlocked out of the box any where in the world.

  7. I don't 'really want to unlock my player,' and I wasn't missing any point, I just want to know if it's possible.

If it isn't, then so be it. I just saw a thread om this very site (https://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/samsung-bd-d5100/11534) saying that it is possible, but I was reporting that I couldn't get it to work when others could and was wondering if anybody could help.

Appologies to all for being so stupid as to not know that the days of unhacking out of the box are through. As, morevoer, am I with this website.

Very condescending post that by the way mate.

    Godspeed to you all

My point was not to offend you, but newbies always seize on the "one in a million" chance as meaning that they are the one and that's not realistic. Probably in your case the firmware was updated and it broke the hack. Not much you can do about that. If I/we have made it clear so that in the future you don't expect to be able to unlock something you buy in a store, then we've done our part and saved you money and aggravation whether you like it or not. Was what I said really so bad? At no point did I insult your intelligence. You can keep trying to unlock the player and spend more time on it if you wish. Won't hurt me any. I would think based on your first post that you do "really want to unlock your player", but if you are content in not being able to watch your other region DVDs and BDs with your Samsung, that's OK as I'm not effected in any way by that decision.

Strangely, VERY early BD-D5100's COULD be hacked. But the first "update" (update meaning **** You buyers) to the firmwear made it impossible. It was never a simple hack, it required downloading and installing a new outside firmwear, and then hacking that..

If you want to watch Criterion BluRays, or Asian BluRays in the UK now, the only reliable way is to pay someone who's done the hard work for you, with hardware mods.

Thank Goodness for Momitsu / Tevion from 3 or 4 years ago.. Still working (fingers crossed)
