hello , I am converting mostly .mkv movies to .avi and then burning them to DVD with TMPGenc DVD Author 3 with DIVX Authoring 3.0.5.149

I am burning an NTSC format to a standard 4.7 DVD ( for playback on a widescreen LCD TV) .

In TMPGenc DVD Author 3 there are only three options available for "Wide mode settings" :

    ("Letterbox"
    "Pan and Scan"
    "Letterbox/Pan and Scan")

I want the resulting DVD to fill up the entire screen of the television, so which one would I use?

Selecting letterbox usually produces a DVD which forms a rectangle on the TV screen with black
borders, not full screen at all.

Or is the problem the aspect ratio?

Should I be using 4:3 or 16:9 ? (to completely fill the screen)

  2. A widescreen television has a width to height ratio of 1.78:1 (16:9). Most movies are wider than that at 2.39:1 and are normally shown on a widescreen television set with black bars (letterboxing) above and below the picture to keep the aspect ratio. There are two ways to get such a movie to fill the screen. You can stretch it to make everyone too tall and thin, or you can cut off the sides. Both are ignorant things to do. If your film is one of the many 2.39:1 films then you want to encode it for DVD as 16:9 with the letterboxing. I don't (and won't) use TMPGEnc so someone else can tell you the right setting to choose. I would have guessed 'Letterbox' but you seem to be saying the resulting DVD when played had black bars on all four sides. Maybe you encoded it as 4:3 when you should have chosen 16:9. That would account for it.

When you're all done and decide you still don't like the black bars, use the zoom on your remote control to make it full screen.

I am converting mostly .mkv movies to .avi and then burning them to DVD
Another silly thing to do - making two separate conversions. Do it once - straight to DVD. Since you don't know what you're doing, I might suggest AvsToDVD which will mostly keep you from making wrong choices.

    thanks,

I am getting black bars above and below with 16:9 letterboxing, isn't there some way to just have it fill the screen with no black bars?

I might try AVsToDVD , the version of TMPGenc DVD Author I have doesn't handle .mkv

I am going to try WINX DVD Author to do as you suggested, it converts mkv straight to DVD and burns it.

I bet it will be the same thing, no full screen display in the final result with 16:9 letterboxing,
though to be fair WINX has an option box to uncheck "Auto Add Letter Box" , so that may solve
the problem. I will try burning a DVD and let everyone know how it worked.

Sure you can, you butcher the film by cutting off the left and right parts to make it fit.

Or alternatively you can watch only Stanley Kubrick films at home on a full screen tv.

Just author the movie/tv in 16:9 and then when playing the show use the zoom on your tv control, problem solved.
