All my DVDs I bought in Ireland, Play.com or Amazon.co.uk.
My old NordMende could play them all. It died on me though.
So I bought a new Panasonic DVD-S500 at D.I.D, here in Ireland. It does not play some of the DVDs, all of which should be Region 2 (Ireland), as I believe they are all PAL, there may be a few that I bought through amazon.co.uk that may be NTSC, but I do not think so.
Is there any way to a) check what format (ie Pal, NTSC) and b) to "fix" the Panasonic to play all my DVDs (I have a good collection, my former editor said I should go to NetFlix or something online to watch movies, instead of buying DVDs).
Now I have two more questions not really related to the thread topic, but I do not want to start two more threads, being a first-time newbee to the forum.
Firstly, why do DVDs sometimes freeze, even my new Panasonic does it? I either have to skip to the next scene or try a coiuple of other things.
Secondly, can I burn a Vimeo.com video. It is not for pirating, it is a six-minute 43-second documentary made on me (and my Irish fiancée) for the Immigrant Council of Ireland as part of series on immigrants to Ireland (six in all, including me, to be launched in February). My Irish partner Jennie (I am a Californian, in Ireland for over 19 years) has been in respite care at a nursing home. I'd like to show it to her as she may be there for a while, due to her medical condition.
I appreciate in advice I can get pertaining to these three issue. Thank you for your time.

If you and your player are in Ireland right now.....
Your only problem is the REGION CODE of the discs. -
In sort of understand that, but they were all bought in Regiln 2 and worked on the old DVD, so one would think the new player should play all my DVDs.
Advice please -
Your old player was region free.
DVD players and television bought in a PAL country can view NTSC material.....as long as either the disc or the player is region free. -
So is thee anything I can do Hech 54, to resolve the problem?

You can make them region-free, if that's what you're asking. Decrypt them to the hard drive using DVDFab HD Decrypter or (if without advanced copy protection) DVDDecrypter. Then reburn to disc. If larger than 4.37GB you'll need dual-layer DVD discs.
As for your Vimeo video question, AvsToDVD should be able to convert it to DVD video for burning and playing in DVD players. -
Most dvds will show the region code in a label on the back of the disk.
If the disk is NTSC it should playback on PAL equipment but you may have to alter a setting on the player first. Read the manual.
It is not very smart adding un-related questions to a topic since only those who open the topic will see them. Others who could answer those questions will not see them.
Un-related Q1 = scratched or badly pressed disks. Different players are more sensitive.
Un-related Q2. Download the video. AVStoDVD to create a dvd. imgburn to burn that dvd on to a blank disk. If you meant something else then do start another topic. -
Thanks DB83, I chedked on DVD (Sea Wolves, David Niven, Gregory Peck, Roger Moore) and yes, it say in small print, only for Canada and USA, I assumed that since I bought it at Amazon.co.uk and it played on the old player…

Remember that NTSC and Region Code are two different animals. I have several NTSC disks but these playback fine on my equipment since they are Region 2 or Region-Free.
You might find a Region-free hack for your new player but that is always a risky venture since you could end up breaking it completely. -
Apparently I can reset the DVD to play NTSC videos in PAL format, according to the instruction manual. Thanks Hech 54, DB83 and Manono for your advice and tups.
I will also try the tips you gave on burning that Vimeo video onto a disk for Jennie, she doesn't have a computer (and nor access to one, I believe), but I can arrnge to give her our portable DVD player for her room.
