I would like to purchase the WinX DVD Ripper Platinum.
1. Can anyone please tell me if this program condenses movies down? I am currently using Nero which will take a longer movie and condense it down but you lose out on a bit of quality. That doesn't bother me at all.
I do not want a program that makes me use a dual layer.
2. I've also been using Slyfox AnyDVD for taking care of the encryption protection. Do I need to buy this again for my new computer or will the WinX do this? It says it does, but, I'm skeptic.
3. I am unsure if I should also get the package that can be used for up to three computers. I would only be getting this in case I get a new computer down the road and don't want to buy it again. Can the other uses be kept "on ice" till I want to use them?
Thank you

Keep AnyDVD and forget the rest.
Once you've decrypted and ripped the movie to hard drive with AnyDVD, to fit to single layer DVD you can:
1) Re-encode with DVDRebuilder (free). Nothing you can buy will produce better quality.
2) Transcode with DVDShrink (free). Faster than DVDRB, but lesser quality.
Burn with ImgBurn only. There are technical reasons why it's best, but perhaps you need not know the details.
AFAIK, if and when you get a new computer, you can simply install AnyDVD and enter your key. But I'm not sure, as I use a different ripper.
And welcome to the forum.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Thank you for your reply.
I was trying to take the easy way out and get the package deal they are offering for $30 with lifetime updates etc.
But, I guess once I learn the way you are suggesting it should be worth it.
My question about my Slysoft AnyDVD.
I was unaware that AnyDVD did anything other than decrypt. Are you saying it will also rip the movie to my hard drive? Or did I misinterpret that?
I will for sure look into the other info you shared. I had used DVDshrink YEARS ago, I'm sure it's been simplified by now?
I'll let you know how things work out. -
It's been quite a while, but I think you can right click the fox logo in the tray and there's an option to rip to hard drive as files or ISO image.
At any rate, you can do a copy/paste to hard drive. AnyDVD is a driver-level decrypter that removes encryption in the background, much like DVDFabPasskey (what I use).
If you have a fairly fast computer, you could re-encode or transcode directly from disc with AnyDVD running in the background. That was not recommended when computers were slower, as the optical drive had to be working longer. Now, for DVDs, it might make little difference. I do Blu-Rays exclusively now, and the programs I use (e.g. RipBot) extract the streams first before starting the encode. Though I extract main movie first anyway with Clown_BD. Just because Clown_BD is more reliable for making the correct selection.
DVDShrink has been abandoned for a long time now, but it still works on decrypted files and a good many other discs without advanced anti-copy protections (probably still the majority of discs).
You'll notice that WinX DVD Ripper is not listed in the tools here. There's a reason for that. IIRC, whenever the name of that program pops up here, it's denigrated by people who should know.Pull! Bang! Darn! -
Thank you so much. This was the reason why I joined the forum, to get info such as this.
And, thanks for the heads up about the program WinX. I will no longer consider the buy.
I will however have to put some brain matter into learning how to do this another way as you have recommended.
Hard teaching an Old Dog new tricks, but, not impossible.
My computer is new and I got the fastest processor that was reasonable. But, I am also totally dependent on my WiFi's lack of power. Not sure that has anything to do with it even.
I have some time off this next week so will try and have a go at your suggestions.
Thank you.
