Is it still the best way to edit a DVD, without re-encoding? Are there other free-trial video editors that will do the same? I record stuff from tv with my DVD-Recorder/DVR unit and want to edit out the commercials first before saving it to DVD. Please advise. Thanks!

MPEG-VCR is another editor you can try for editing DVD-compatible MPEG-2 video. It is very reasonably priced: http://www.womble.com/download/vcr.html

    1) VOB2MPEG (free) to revert the VOB files back to one MPEG2 file...
    2) AviDemux to cut on key frames
    COPY
    COPY
    MPEG-PS
setting to output a new, commercial-free version.
    3) Pick a free DVD authoring tool (DVDFlick, AVStoDVD, etc etc) to create a DVD.
    4) Done.
*AviDemux also has a DVD output setting but I have never used it....I don't know exactly what it does.

Or the old free dvdshrink in the reauthor mode. Maybe not best and easiest for cutting out commercial though...

    Or Tmpgenc authoring works.

Before I obtained MPEG-VCR and bought VideoReDo to deal with the transmission-error-ridden captures from my TV tuner card, I used Cuttermaran for editing DVD video. It is freeware that can cut on any frame and do smart encoding via QEnc, if set up properly. However the video and audio from the source to be edited must be demultiplexed before they can be imported. Since my DVD authoring software, GUI for dvdauthor/Muxman works best with demultiplexed video and audio, it was not an inconvenience.
