OK, what format should I burn to the disc? Should I convert the .ts file to mp4 or will most blu-ray players play a ts file that is on a disc that I insert into the player?

Most newer blu-ray players, that have support for other formats like mkv, mp4, should play it as is. Some have differences between USB and optical disc. Some only play the other formats properly from USB - so it depends on specific model . Older blu-ray players, that don't have support for various filetypes, can only play authored discs
