Some French characters messed up in subtitles

Hi everyone,

I've started learning French recently and I want to watch French movies with French subtitles, but all movies with French subtitles that I've tried so far have some of the characters messed up (instead of è there is č et cetera)



I tried find and replace all in Notepad++, but it won't replace it with the correct character.
I also tried adding a French keyboard, but that doesn't help either

I am on Windows 8.1 and my default language is Czech

Can anybody help? Is it the coding of the subtitle file (I attached it, along with a screenshot of the problem)

Convert the .SRT file from ANSI to UTF-8 or Unicode, problem solved.

The encoding is ANSI. Open it in Notepad and save with UTF-8 encoding selected at thhe bottom of the Save As window.

Thanks for help, but it doesn't work, since the characters are already messed up in notepad when I open it with it.

Wrong. It's you who doesn't know how to use Windows, EditPlus, or both things

Menu "Document" => File Encoding => Change File Encoding

Unfortunately Windows, the text editors and the so-called word processors assume two stupid defaults,
the extended-ASCII monstrosity and the half-assed idea named "local codepage".
When let's say Notepad++ loads an ANSI-encoded file, it has no way of knowing which "codepage" the characters above 0x80 (128 in decimal notation) belong to.

Thanks, but I tried it the way you say (even in Notepad++ Format - Convert to UTF-8), but it doesn't work. When the document is loaded, it already has the characters replaced for the wrong ones and when it's encoded, it stays with the wrong ones.

Something must be wrong with my Windows configuration or something

That makes it even worse - it repleaces all special characters with the boxes


I found a way, however - When i open the subtitle file in Google Chrome and then copy it to a new document in Notepad++ that set in UTF-8, it works

I have ZERO experience with Windows 8, I must admit : –/

I can only say that it IS NOT an operating system at all
