  1. Everytime I try to encode .DTS or convert .DTS audio from my Blu-Rays with MeGui, it never works.

If I use HD Streams extractor and tell it to extract the .DTS as .AC3, then it gives me a .AC3 file it made using eac3to in MeGui and that usually works fine when I try to re-encode that .AC3 to .AAC with MeGui.

I notice this in the log though, its keeps saying this

The Arcsoft and Sonic decoders don't seem to work, will use libav instead.
The libav DTS decoder doesnt decode the full DTS-HD information <WARNING>

I never had any problem until now though. I just tried to do that method which has worked for me well so far and the .AC3 audio I extracted has ALOT of crackling in it and it sounds horrible. I can encode the .AC3 file with MeGui but I cant encode the .DTS file to .AAC like I can with the .AC3 file.

I spent forever trying to find this out and have read in alot of places that you need arcsoft total media center or something like that. I couldn't even find the trial for it, I guess its no longer in existence.

How can I get these .DTS files to work with eac3to in MeGui when I try to extract .DTS from my Blu-Rays as .AC3 and not give me that error and crackling audio output?

I would just encode the .DTS into .AAC but it never works, thats why I extract it as .AC3 first.

Arcsoft has killed off a lot of their products. Total Media Center is one that they killed. They also killed Total Media Theater, which is a real shame as it was by far and away the best consumer software BluRay player available. Basically all they seem to make and sell now are photography type programs or apps. This gigantic product kill off happened a few months ago. Time will tell whether this was a wise business decision or the product of clueless upper management who misread the marketplace. I'm predicting it's the latter.

I'm getting that too. I have at least three versions of the dll but I'm not sure I'm allowed to upload them to this forum, and last time I tried to post a link to mediafire it wouldn't let me.

-Edit- I'm wondering if someone forced 2shared to remove it after I posted links to it on two forums. I guess I shouldn't do that again.

Try putting it back on some sharing service, but rename it. Include instructions in your post with the link that the file MUST be renamed and tell what to rename it. Yes, no matter what you do, some people will simply never be able to handle renaming the file, but doing that should get you around the file magically disappearing shortly after you post it.

You probably shouldn't upload it to the forum, but a moderator would have to give the definitive word on that.

  8. Well thanks for the assistance everyone.

Is that line in the log anything to worry about?

The libav DTS decoder doesnt decode the full DTS-HD information <WARNING>

Is this causing me to get an audio file thats missing something important? They sound just fine to me when they work and encode properly. What information could they be missing?

  9. It means 7.1 streams won't be decoded as 7.1, but as 5.1 . If that's important to you, then it's missing something important

I'll be glad when Kodi's innovation spreads to the rest of the video processing community. I'm well aware the Arcsoft Decoder is the one piece of software in my PC that's not technically legit and I'm waiting for the day that I no longer need it installed.

That wasn't mine by the way, I found it by way of google, I'm not sure why people keep asking where to find the thing... G O O G L E

Has LibAV figured how to decode DTS-HD now or are you telling him decoding just the core is fine?

So its going to ruin extra channels by removing them, or is it like downmixing to stereo only its downmixing to 5.1?

I'm thinking it was pressure from the big boys...

@killerteengohan, unless I'm very mistaken, it is just removing the extra. AFAIK, that part is an EXTENSION and as such is currently not readable/parseable to the (exisiting freeware) apps. If it were readable, it could have been used directly and not just downmixed. By being unparseable, it's just extra junk baggage the parser is throwing away. The 5.1 is part of the CORE, and that spec has been understood for quite some time.

  14. Well if I wont even notice it then it doesn't bother me at all. I have at best a 5.1 sound system, so not having 7.1 isn't a big deal unless I will be missing sound effects or music, or something that should be there after encoding it to 5.1 AAC.

  15. Yes they are ignored , not a proper downmix (you would need to have access to all the data to do a proper downmix)

The only way to decode 7.1 dts-hd with full quality with eac3to is with arcsoft decoder ( although patches are suppoed to be coming to libav , but they've been saying that for years now so don't hold your breath)

@killerteengohan: In the past, I used meGUI also for encoding my videos for the AppleTV Gen 3... Then I changed my media-playback-settings and attached a 5.1 surround-system to my AppleTV. Now I need to re-encode all my media files again (and will also improve visual quality).

My problem was: When I tried to encode any DTS to AC3 with the Aften Encoder, the audio quality was fine playing at the computer with VLC ... but when I played the audio with the AppleTV, the audio had some crackling in it. First I thought my connection from the AppleTV to the sound system were faulty or something other, but then I tried to mux the encoded video file with DTS - sound, then put the file through a Mac-programm named iFlicks and this program encoded the sound again to AC3 and AAC. And the audio-quality was better (not better... yes I know AC3 is not better then DTS ....) then before when I encoded the audio-files with meGUI and Aften Encoder.

Then I checked what encoder is used in iFlicks and I found out: it uses FFMPEG for video and audio.

So I changed my encoder in meGUI from Aften to FFMPEG. I even changed the Audio decoder for reading the file to FFAudioSource.

    And then, finally:

I got with meGUI encoded video files with AC3 audio all compatible with AppleTV 3 (I donīt put AAC in the final M4V - Files, but I just use the encoded material with AppleTV or XBMC on Amazon FireTV or a Computer als HTPC).

So in short: Try changing the decoder and encoder to FFMPEG.

Most people complain about the quality of FFMPEG, but it works good for me, I always select 640 kbps and the quality is fine on the AppleTV.
