Hello all, I've read some of the forums, and didn't quite find what I needed. I'm sorry if I missed it.

Long and short, my father is looking to back up family VHS tapes to dvd. I am looking to find the best way for him to do this, that is also simple. I've seen devices such as Elgato Video Capture, Hauppauge USB-Live 2, etc. Pretty much need something plug and play, I know you can, and many do, adjust a vast amount of settings, but that is over his head in this case.

So what would be the best device to use to capture RCA / S-video and burn with a program like Roxio My Dvd? Or, would he get the best results from a VCR that can burn to DvD? If that is the case, what would be the best one(s) to purchase? Thanks.

  2. Stop using 'best' and 'simple' in the same sentence. The two are mutually exclusive. Simple would be a USB device that caps in DVD-compliant MPEG-2 video with included software to edit and author for DVD. Most of them come with that kind of software included, often ArcSoft Showbiz. If the choice is between something like the Hauppauge USB-Live 2 and a combo VCR/DVD-recorder, I think I'd go with the Hauppauge USB-Live 2, but I don't know what software comes with it.

There is such a thing as a "best simple solution"...aka the best solution that is simple. Modifiers. (Not exclusive...)

I already knew that an analog to USB would be simple to use, rather than installing a card and setting up software. I was more looking for the quality of said devices, which seem to differ. But it seems Hauppauge makes quality devices, assuming it's just as good, if not better than Elgato etc. Thanks.

  4. Yes, the Hauppage gets good reviews around here. That and the Diamond VC-500.
