x265 Programmers guide

Hi,
I would like to modify x265 code, but it is hard to guess how the x265 works without sufficient comments or any guide for programmers. Could you please help me in this by providing overall program flow with some details?

I would like to modify algorithms in motion estimation, now I am trying to understand the flow with a debugger, but it is a tedious job. So kindly help me.

Not a direct answer to your question, but I think you'd better join the x265 IRC channel @ Freenode.
In this way, you could talk directly to the x265 developers (Steve Borho, Min Chen et al.)
and to experienced programmers (Derek Buitenhuis, JEEB, nevcairiel) as well.
