  1. Let me present my problem

I used to play all my Dual Audio AVIs in Windows Media Player 12 (Windows 7) just fine, I could select which language I wanted (Fullscreen mode > Right click > Select Audio Track & Language)

Then I installed AviRecomp to add hard Subtitles to some Vids, and the computer was working fine until last week (except for a couple of icons in the taskbar everytime I open some video, that was so annoying) when I unistalled AVIRecomp ('cuz I don't use it anymore) all my problems started, everytime I played any of my Dual Audio AVIs in Windows Media Player 12 both sounds were played at the same time and it couldn't let me choose the audio like before just showed me "predetermined..."

So I searched around the web for a solution to this, but in every page the solution was the same "install VLC" or "install this pack of codecs" so no real solution to my problem

Then I tried the Microsoft Fix It tool and it found the problem but couldn't fix it (some DirectVobSub filter codec wasn't unistalled correctlly or something like that)

So I was giving up until I read somewhere to use Codec Tweak Tool portable to fix the issue, and well my problem is now half-solved 'cuz if I play a Dual Audio AVI coded in DivX (see the Zoids one above) I can change the audio just like before

But if the file is coded with Xvid (in this case the supercampeones one) it plays both languages at the same time

Codec Tweak Tool only give me this options:

In the preferred decoders there's only two options "Microsoft or USE MERIT" it doesn't matter which one I used for Xvid it keeps giving me both audios at the same time

In the DirectShow section are only two codecs in audio is Microsoft G.711 decoder and in source is IVF source filter, and these are the codecs that Codec Tweak Tool found in the VFW / ACM codecs section

And the same here, I disable all the options and is useless, if I go to MS Codec Tweaks and disable media foundation it let me choose audio in the Xvid movies but shows no image, just audio

*Also I used AVI FourCC Code Changer to treat 'em like Divx and WMP12 let me switch between audios, so I know it has to do with some codec playing xvid files but I need to know which one is causing the issue and how to fix it.

This is the gspot screen with the file info:

So any tips to solve my problem

Maybe you can just try install the xvid codec and see if it makes any difference.

Or try another video and audio splitter like LAV Filters, haali media splitter or av splitter. They should work fine together with WMP.

  3. That's not a satisfactory solution, what I need is to solve the misconfiguration of the codec which is causing the issue

I'm afraid the ACTUAL problem is not "the misconfiguration of the codec", but something deeper and more complicated.

Somehow, WMP 12 stopped using its audio-stream switcher correctly. If the Registry was royally-screwed by the poorly-designed uninstaller, then (probably) it will be easier to re-install the OS than to find the way to fix the issue.

You may not like to read this, but WMP really really sucks.

  5. Yeah, I know there's no love for WMP... so there's no way to fix it, well, I guess I should keep changing the FourCC code in the AVI files then, anyway thanks for your time

Have you tried changing the file extension from .avi to .divx?

Remuxing in an mkv container might work also. Those are the only two ways that I am aware of for using dual audio files.

Oh, and use MPC-HC instead of WMP.

A tool for changing extension in Windows 7 is "Change File Extension". If you use XP then a program called "Properties Plus". Both programs give you a right click context menu in Explorer.

I agree. It's probably in the AVI Splitter. Try re-registring quartz.dll (Windows' built in reader/splitter/codec library).

A DirectShow Filter graph for an AVI file with dual audio tracks (from GraphStudio):

    The Avi Splitter is quartz.dll.

  8. I know I can use a different player (actually I use Applian FLV Media Player for MKVs and FLVs) and they work fine there, but that's not the problem.

Yeah, I did that too, from Gspot, and even I did it manually (cmd > regsvr32 quartz.dll) but the problem persist, maybe I'm not being clear enough

If the dual Audio AVI file says this:
    Name: FCC.png
Views: 714
Size: 2.5 KB

I can switch audios, but if it says this:
    Name: FCCXvid.png
Views: 749
Size: 2.3 KB

I can hear both audios at the same time and WMP won't let me choose which one.

So I know it has to do with the way WMP12 treats Xvid header coded files so it must be a misconfiguration assigned to that type, because if I change the "FCC Description Code" from xvid to divx and the "FCC Used Coded" from XVID to DX50 in the file, WMP let me choose the audio I wanna play.

I guess making that change in my AVI files is the only way to play 'em properly in WMP for now.

    Anyway thanks for your time
